Can you identify this steering box??

It doesn't have any name on it and I wanted to buy a longer cable for it (moved the console) Can anyone tell me what it is or what cable I can use in it? I found this one http://www.iboats.com/Uflex-Univers...6521475--**********.799159365--view_id.366867 But not sure if it will work..

remove the old cable first to make sure it has the same bare end BEFORE you order.

Not sure what it is or how old, you would know better. What was it hooked to Old, New, year of boat?? OMC, Mercruiser ????
Kind of looks like an old OMC. Either one, you need a new steering cable and helm assembly. They come as a kit. The chances of finding cables for those old units are some where between none and zero. The full kits are usually only slightly more than cable alone, so why waste your time trying to find something that doesn't exist.

It was connected to a seventies model omc and I have all the parts to connect it to the console.. It works nice and smooth, and I figure if I could buy a cable for half the price of a kit I would be ahead..

Maybe an early Uflex helm? OMC also made their own helms for a while. Uflex models had pinion gears and a sun gear to drive the cable rather than a single gear with full cable contact. If it were me, I'd just install a complete kit.

Ayuh,... It don't work that way,...
A Complete helm, 'n cable is almost the same price as a cable or a helm...
