whether or not neutral+engine off coasting is harmful depends on the transmission design- how the output bearings are lubricated

There are RV sites with listings of which auto-transmission vehicles can be safely towed with 4 wheels down in neutral behind an RV

There are some FWD, RWD and 4X4 vehicles that can roll forever no problem.

You push started a chev wirh a 350 automatic, B.S. a 350 doesnt have a rear pump it cant be done , the last chev that could be push started was a powerglide, 1.82 ratio only, the 1.76 ratio didnt have a rear pump after 65

Don't know that much about transmissions, but I don't know what else to say.. We did it and it worked. Pushed it dumped in the 1. Tried faster. Right around 45 it turned and fired up.

Also how were we able to key pop our cars and trucks in high school? Shut them down, coast turn ignition on and BANG... Stupid now, awesome then.

Sorry, but there is no way you push started a TH350.. If the engine isn't spinning the pump then there is NO fluid pressure to engage any clutch packs... Without fluid pressure the transmission isn't going to do anything other than freewheel or lock (in park).

No, you can't push start an automatic. In the early 80's I had a sergeant insist that he could get our dodge army van to push start. I told him it wouldn't work, but he didn't believe a college boy. We pushed it up to 45 mph and nothing happened.

Re: Can you push start an automatic truck?

Gave my buddy a call. (the one that was getting my old impala for the derby)

I apologize I was wrong.

We didn't push start this car. The engine wouldn't run very long in this car so we towed it to his place. Then towed his old pickup truck. manual trans but always popped out of 3 & 4, he said that's what we pushed started dumping it in 1st at around 45 to see if we could blow the transmission apart.

The confusion came because I put a 305 with the Th350 in my 83 Buick regal. (The impala was an 81) he pulled the engine out of the truck, put it in the impala. Demo derbied the car, Then pulled the engine and trans and put it in my Regal.

Once again I apologize.
