Hello,

I have a 1991 Skeeter 16' boat. It's a good little boat, but the V has quite a few scratch marks in the front from hitting sticks, etc. In a few places I can see some raw fiberglass, but most are surface scratches.

It is the original Skeeter blue. A couple questions if you don't mind....

1) What is the best was to touch up these marks?
2) Do I need to do anything special for the areas where I can see fiberglass?
3) Can I match the original color and where would I look?
4) Can you add something to the bottom of the V to protect it from more scratches?

Thanks everyone...

your answer is 'yes' to all your questions.
1. Epoxy filler
2. Possibly a little more glass cloth and epoxy
3. Get in touch with the manufacturer and find out what colour was used.
4. It's called a keel guard, search the thread by realgun, 'project long haul' he installed one.

cheers

Keel guard I installed was more for cosmetics than anything else. :) The bottom of the V had absolutly no Gelcoat left. First thing is to sand a bit to get some good clean glass to adhere your repair to. Then wash with Acetone to get rid of the dust. I mixed some epoxy and brushed it over the area first. Installing the keelguard was rather easy and straight forward just follow the directions.

IMHO you can use marine tex to fill the dings to. What I am going to do is mix a fast epoxy with milled glass fiber till I can't stir it then use that to fix my dings that are on the strakes and such.

If the scratches are not to bad,you can get gelcoat kits with matching colors.Very easy to use, comes with directing, cost around $20.00.Can be found at West Marine or on line.
Sorry to say, those keel guards look tacky to me,but to each his own.
