Cannot get lower unit off... ? Help needed!

1977 Johnson 200 hp V6
water pump is getting weak. I got a new one. removed the 4 lower unit bolts in the front and the one over the prop is giving havoc. it threaded out about 1" then stopped and just spins. but. seems like the lower unit would drop down that 1" , or not? do i have to remove the prop and disconnect internally anything on this unit?

You need to remove the trim tab and the bolt that is hidden above it in addition to the one in front of the trim tab. That makes a total of seven bolts to remove including the one that holds the trom tab.

you rock! that got it to start dropping, but there seems to be something else holding it, it only dropped 1". looks to maybe be a small verticle rod in the front...??

You still have the shift rod connected at the top. Look under the carburetors for the connector.

The rod is held by a bellcrank. You loosen the screw that forms the fulcrum for the bellcrank, then spread the fingers at the shift rod end.
