Cannot get lower unit off

I have 1989 35hp Force outboard. Need to change water pump but cannot get lower unit off. Manual says to disconnect intermediate shift rod from lower shift rod but I cant figure this one out. Any help?

Let's see---It should be remove the bolts holding the lower unit on. Put the engine in forward gear then pull down hard on the lower unit to get about 1/2 inch clearance. In the front you should see a cylindrical slug holding the shift rods together. Remove the snall cotter pin and regular nail shaped pin from the cylinder and the whole lower unit should now drop right down.

Yep, towards the front of the lower unit you should see the gear shift linkge hook up to the shifter leading into the gear case. There is a tiny cotter pin the holds a small pin in place that connects the two ends together. Pop that sucker out and it will drop right down.
