89 Force 125. just had engine rebuilt with .030 over pistons. I replaced both CDI boxes stator and trigger, carb kits came with just the needle and seats and seal kit. I could not set the timing started with the plugs out connected to top #1 spark plug with the 3/8 gap. fresh battery cranking should be set at 28 BTDC. as i turn the adjuster it jumps all over.

so i bought a new snap-on timing light went to the lake had it set to 2 stroke. It would not give me a rpm reading. And i could not set the timing at 28 deg. at 5000 rpm or is it 5300 rpm anyway. Im redy to give up on this boat. I wanna take it to the dealer but last time before the rebuild it was $400 to diagnosis.

any help would be appreciated.

youre motor doesnt have to run to set the timing, find 28 degrees on the flywheel take a marker and hi lite it, disconnect all four coil wires and ground them to the engine block, bypass neutral safety switch, connect timing light to the no1 coil wire, put the throttle to wot, have someone crank engine over aim light at flywheel while engine is cranking and adjust to 28 degrees

Get a manual.A factory manual.
In there is the steps for static timing. They might be here someplace.
Do a search for static timing and it might pop up.
That's all you need.
Do a compression test(anyway),then check for spark on all cylinders.

just curious, why not let a tech at the dealer or marina set it for you? He'll spend 5 minutes on it, your job is to convince him to let you slide on the one hour labor minimum shop time. Maybe the boss is cool enough to let one of his guys do it "on the side" for like 20 bucks or so..... buy some accessory while you're there, oil, drain plug, something like that...

50 on ALL cylinders???
Something doesn't sound right.
Get a different guage.A screw in type.
If you just rebuilt you shouldn't get such a low reading on all cylinders.
