New to me, impeller is fine and was peeing last week. I took it apart to check seals and they were actually okay. I made sure the tube was in correctly, but now nothing comes out. I checked the pee hole and flush hole and seem okay. Is there two ways the cover over the impeller can go on. I was wondering if it is on backwards because it can fit, but it doesn't seem to want to go on with cooling tube "ahead" of driveshaft. Any help is appreciated. Of course we are trying to go away tomorrow.! :)

The pump cover goes on with the water outlet pointing aft, not forward.

There also must be a plastic "guide tube" inserted into the water tube outlet in the pump cover. Note this is just a 'slip fit' into the cover.

This guide tube helps catch the water tube as you're installing the lower unit, and directs it into the pump cover. It's almost impossible to get the water tube in the correct place unless this guide tube is installed.

Make sure the impeller key is engaged into the impeller. You can do this by rotating the driveshaft by hand and you should be able to feel the drag of the impeller blades and/or hear the rubber blades squeaking against the stainless pump insert.

A rubber grommet is installed in the pump cover; make sure it's there. The water tube engages into this grommet and you won't pump any water up to the powerhead if the grommet is missing.

One last thing you might do is blow air up the water tube or connect a supply of water to make sure there are no blockages in the motor.

Just my $.02... My '86 50hsp doesn't have one either. The tube fits easily into the water pump housing/grommet. I do remember fighting to get the tube in the guide on my 115hsp 6cyl merc, though.

A 9.8 HP (110), if it has a plastic housing, needs a guide tube. They are rather thick-walled with the end that goes up cut at an angle.

The fact that a 50HP doesn't need a guide tube is immaterial to this discussion.

If the little Twin has an alum water pump it'd be older than '68 (if I recall correctly) and maybe doesn't have a guide tube. But it'd be really really difficult to get a Plastic Pump model together without the guide.

Note that these guide tubes do tend to swell up to where you can't get them back in the pump. Maybe it got tossed by a previous owner because of this. New one should be available at the dlr for not much $$.

Here's some info I pulled off of DougRussell.com for the 'guide sleeve':

Here's a good picture of one:
