I was getting low water preasure readings,(1990 200 Yamaha), I decided to replace the impeller. Took the lower unit off switched out the impeller put it back on, and got a big fat 0 on my preasure gauge.

My problem was impatience... I screwed up seating the pump, I should have used new gaskets, and I didn't put the key back on the shaft properly so the impeller did not seat all the way. I messed up.

Today I had much more patience. So I again pulled the lower unit, used new gaskets, new housing, put the key in correct, and seated everything fine.....

Now I can't get the lower unit back on. The shift spline goes in, the feed from the pump goes in, and I think the shaft is going in (partially) because I can no longer spin the prop, but it stops about an inch and a half short of fully seating. I've been at it for 3 hours with a helper, but we are skunked...

Put the lower unit back on yesterday in less than 5 mins but today not getting far? Please any suggestions / recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

Also... Had the boat for about 1 year. Besides the impeller, thermostats, lower unit lube, plugs, de-carb, and greasing all fittings, would there be any other annual maintenance that someone could recommend. This is my first Yamaha, and I have been VERY happy with it.

you may have missed the hole. pay careful attention that the 2 mating surfaces are parallel as you replace the gearbox. shine a flashlight in the driveshaft cavity and get a better idea of the path it has to take. it always helps if you can visualise.

Also be sure the gearcase and shifter are bith in neutral. Some times you may have to turn the flywheel slightly to line up drive shaft splines.

Go figure.... did not realize that the gear box went into gear with such a slight twist. After you mentioned the need to be in neutral, I realized that based upon my first post... my ability to spin the prop which in turn spinned the shaft meant that I was in gear. I gave the shift spline a tiny twist and low an behold it is now in neutral. Will try to mount the gear box shortly, and I will post back. Thanks Very Very Much!

What they said above. Just don't force it. If it won't go something is misaligned- either the drive shaft spline, the water tube grommet, or the shift shaft connection. If all are aligned it will go in easily. A helping hand is a good idea.

100% easier... it would stop short about an inch and a half because the gear box was in forward. Slipped back on in 2 mins after making sure in was in neutral... Thanks Guys...

BTW... what a comedy of errors. I'm not mad because it's preventative maintenance, but the cause of my low preasure had nothing to do with the water pump... The plastic T that branched off the tell tale line to feed my preasure guage was cracked and water was leaking out... New T... and my peasure seems ok...
