cant get lower unit to come off johnson 175

have got all bolts off as manual instructed but i cannot find the shift rod retaining screw to let shift rod come loose can anyone explain what and where this is i am trying to replace the waterpump/impeller model #j175txctd 1983 model

rcselby,<br /><br />THe shift rod connection is under the bottom carburetor. It's a real pain to get to. It helps if the L/U is in reverse.

remove your starter and probably your starter solenoid to remove the starter. This way you can see under the bottom carb. Sometimes you might have to remove the bottom carb. It depends on what kind of motor skills you have with your hands. Good luck it is not hard to get to that bolt holding the shift rod.
