Can't lower my prop

I have a 1989 18' Caravelle with a mercruiser engine. I cant lower the prop; a salesman at a local marine shop told me my hydraulic fluid was low. He sold me the fluid and a pistol grip oiler gun and showed me where the reservoir was. I took the allen screw out of the valve to insert the fluid. When i attempted to do so, most of it spilled out. It seems as if it needs to somehow be pressurized in, and a little oiler gun isn't going to cut it. Any suggestions?

Have an assistant push the 'Down" button while you apply direct pressure to the drive.....
Corrosion on the trim rams will make them sticky....
They have much more "pull" than "push"....
That does not mean that you don't possibly have a leak, or are low on fluid.....
Several different pumps are used.....
Merc. manual #6, chapter #5 should answer all of your questions......
Post your serial #, & maybe Don S will be able to provide the proper link, I am pretty sure it is available online as a PDF.......JK

You should fill the oil in the resevoir near the trim motor. If you are low in oil, that is where you check and also see if there is any water in your oil (trim).

Re: Can't lower my prop

The pump runs. When i managed to squeeze a little bit of fluid into the reservoir the thing lowered all the way, then i couldn't get it to come back up. one of the lines that connects directly to the trim is leaking. when most of the fluid leaked back out i was able to manually lift the whole thing up. now i can move it up and down manually and there is no hydraulic pressure whatsoever. i need to fix the leak and refill the fluid. my question is, what do i need to use to get the hydraulic fluid to go into the valve. the oiler gun isn't' strong enough.

I think you're trying to fill it in the wrong place.

Have someon run the trim while you are in looking in the engine compartment.

This will help you find the trim pump.

Depending on the model there are slightly different ways of filling it. I don't think any of them are under pressure but I could be wrong.

Re: Can't lower my prop

ive' located the trim pump, and im' pretty sure im' attempting to fill in the right place. the reservoir does not have a cap, but rather a valve. i just need an idea for some other tool to help me get the fluid into the reservoir. the oiler simply isn't putting out enough pressure

Here is a picture of the Prestolite pump that I am assuming you have.

tomswain,

could you post a picture of your pump.. i believe most pumps fill from the top? mine happens to look pretty much exactly like the pic Don posted.. seeing yours might help us figure this out..

Don, it sounds like he has the cannister type and is trying to fill it thru the emerg. bleeder.

Well, then it's up to him to tell us what he has. But no matter what pump he has, how to fill it, fix it, and test it is all in that manual link. All he has to do is look at it. and answer some questions.
