Tell the local constabulary that you think you saw a lowlife stash his dope in there and you can't get it open to find out. They will "help" you! A new box can then be put in by a cabinet shop!

I wiggled and wiggled, pushed, pulled, it and finally it opened * click *. Strange thing though when it opened, the key pulled out the innards of the lock with it. Not the outer frame, but the inner tumbler assembly. I'd love to post pictures, but I'm at work and not near my boat. So I now have a key which goes in and out of the tumbler assembly, a tumbler assembly that goes in and out of the frame (you can "screw" it into a locking position), and a lock that depending how you arrange the two major peices, I can just push down on the lock/key as a whole and the thing pops open. The latch seems to be a spring loaded mechanism which pushes the latch arm past the hitch. There's no swing arm. There were some random screws/nuts in the very bottom of the box (slanted down, nothing that would get in the way...could these be parts that fell off? When I push the lock in, it does the trick. I realize a picture would be nice.

sounds like something is worn, weak, corroded..... look at it close and you can probably bring it back to new....or since you have it out use it to go buy a new matching one.

could be. yer gonna have to look at it close to see. 3 basic method of retaining the cyl. are a screw or nut, generally from the back of the cyl.. a spring loaded wafer retainer. it'll look like one of the brass plate tumblers, but probably slightly wider than a tumbler on one end and will be the in the last tumbler chamber at the back of the cyl.. last method would be a boss. generally ya need to figure the method of being able to turn the cyl. to a position that the slots and bosses line up, than ya can insert the cyl. turn it to hold it in place. if this method, it could be wore out which may have caused the lock out. loose screws cause lockouts... also, determine how far the key is supposed to turn to lock and unlock. that may help put the puzzle together too.....
