Hi,
I've been trying to work out what was wrong with my with my 20 hp chrysler.
I was running it in a 44 galon drum, it was running fine, then all the suddon it back-fired/sneezed
and never ran again. I pulled off the cylinder head and it was fine. Then I cleaned out the carby and tried again but still didn't run. I think the ignition is a bit weak. I dont know the year of it either, which makes it hard to find parts.
If anyone can help it would be much apreceated.

Pull the flywheel and clean both sets of points. Set them to .020. If it still does not fire and run, replace the condensers.

Someplace on the front of the motor is a tag with model#s and a serial#.
Post them and we can figure out the year.
Pics might help.J

Hi,
the model number is: 202HD
and the serial number is: 4761
I think i should just buy a new power head because the crank berings & reid valves are broken. the only other option is to just find another outboard and fix it.

it doesen't have points/condencer. they have been replaced with some sort of electronic ignition. I have no idea what it is:confused: but theres like two small red boxes in place of the points and condencers but there arnt any screws to adjust it.

Outboard115, Try to search 20 HP Chryslers and get some links up with pics related to Iding engine and ignition system (if you c/n take direct pics that would be the best). Help Us Help You!

1. Why are you calling it a 20 HP Chrysler? Is that what the hood/cover is showing?

2. ?the crank berings & reid valves are broken?? Were you running a little hard to get this type of damage?

3. Did you get any history on the motor from the PO as to Year/Model/Modifications?

4. About what year would a 20 HP Chrysler have gone to a stock electronic ignition vs an add-on? Late 70s early 80s is when I started converting some B&S mower from mag system's points/condensers to electronic. I feel the related electronics w/h worked on basic mag systems period. I have only cleaned my 1970 35 HP Chrysler?s points that have served me well since 84.

Re: Can't work out what's wrong with my 20 hp chrysler?????

sorry about late responce,
Will try and get some pics on weekend. I wasn't running the motor very hard at all. most of the time it would run in idle with a 50:1 pre-mixed fuel. now that i had a closer look at it, the reid valves wern't damaged but still not sure about crank berings. I have no history on this motor because it was given to me by an outboard mechanic who was going to throw it away. I can tell its a 20 by the hood and identification plate.
