I acquired a 1980 80HP merc, and have done some work to it (water pump, head gasket) and it has good compression. I took the carbs off and cleaned them and realized the low speed needles were way different on each carb as far as turns out. One was 2 1/2 turns out and the other was 1/4 turn out.... The previous owner said he tried to adjust them ...scary having met the guy.

My question is...whats a good starting point for the low speed screws?

Yes, you have the correct starting point for idle mixture adjustment. BTW- the final settings will likely bedifferent, although likely by an 1/8 of a turn or so.

ABTW - that motor does not have a head gasket.
