Can anyone tell me what is behind the "core plug" on top or the carb and the plug on the side of the carb? Do these have to be removed for proper cleaning? If so, how do i remove them? My carb kit came with replacement plugs but don't want to try and remove them until I know how and know what is behind them.

Thanks!

All orifices and jets need to be properly soaked and cleaned when bathing/rebuilding. The following video may be of help. You will need a punch to pry out the plugs. Be careful with how deep you go! Use a hammer and punch to re seat them. I use the extension piece from a socket set.

i use a small ice pick, and punch the center of the plug and pry it out. when installing i use a piece of wooden dowl, and a tack hammer. works very well.

I drill a hole & pry 'em out with a screwdriver. bit of grease on the drill bit keeps metal out of the carb.

In the video, he didn't remove the jets, just mentions that a special tool is needed, as TD has posted specs for often. What would one look for to decide if the jets need removed/replaced?

Personally I always remove them, soak, then blast with compressed air, ensuring they are completely clean. For me half the job is removing the carbs, so why would I not do it thoroughally? That is just my own humble opinion though.

Doing a job twice is not fun at all.

That video link doesn't work for me. Is there a trick to working it? I need to remove freeze plugs, clean, and replace them on my 1956 Johnson 3hp. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

OK, what is the trick to get these one the go, they don't work and take me to yahoo directory of repair places for carbs. Click on them yourself and see if they work.

Thank you, I noticed he took a punch and removed the sealer over two holes, what did he put back in those holes. Where did he get it since it wasn't a carb rebuild. Is there something there we should be cleaning???

Looks like a rebuild to me.

"Core plugs" -- that guy just pulls one off the shelf (professional mechanics got parts inventories), but they're included in the carb kit. The replacement is a convex shape (looks like a lead contact lense), you drop it over the hole and flatten it out with a hammer & punch, or a socket, or any flat round object that fits. It's a soft metal, so it spreads out & seals the hole.

They give you better access to the tiny passages for cleaning, removal is optional.

I use a drill on 'em, a bit of grease on the bit to keep particles out the carb, and don't push through too hard. But, there's enough empty space behind 'em so you don't have to be too timid, either.
