Getting my 1975 Merc 115 hp ready for the water. I read many posts and see many ads for boat motors that almost always say"need carbs rebuilt". Is there a way I can try to avoid this as long as possible. Can / should I squirt some carb cleaner in carbs ever once in awhile? Additives to gas on regular basis? I've owned this boat for only a year so can't verify winterizing procedures of last owner. I think he did a good job considering the condition of the boat and motor. I did fog the carbs and cylinders as well as used Stable in a full tank of gas.

Re: Carb Cleaning

The best way to avoid cleaning the carbs is to keep running clean, new gas thru them. In other words, use the boat often. Squirting cleaner into the carbs does nothing to clean them. Running seafoam every year or so, may help a bit.
