I seen a carb kit on ebay that said it was for most 5-15hp eska's the kit number is listed as ES631021B, and another web site listed carb kit numbers totally differant for all the differant years and sizes of motors. My question is do I need a specific carb kit for my motor? Model 1978A the number on the metal tag on motor or exaust manifold is 380A and 7530492. Any help in directing me on how to find/order the right carb kit would be great, thanks John P.S. are some kits not as complete as others?

Before spending any money on that outboard, make sure you have spark on both cylinders. If not, save your money, since ignition parts are essentially not available. If you found them, they'd cost more than your outboard would sell for.

The CDI ignition module under the flywheel is the most common failure in those twins. It's not available.

Another source of parts is www.certifiedpartscorp.com. You have to call the phone number on the site with your model number and engine number (on the tag on the engine.)

Re: carb kit for 78' eska 9.9hp ???

I just checked spark on both cylinders, and seem to barely have enough, in both, to give off a little light in one of those in-line light bulb spark tester. Is there a better way to find out if I'm getting enough spark? the motor just has no top end or power on my small 12'er, that's why I'm hoping it's just a carb kit problem...thanks for all your info.

You'll get a better idea if you use an adjustable gap spark tester. Your CDI ignition should give a nice bright blue spark across a 1/4" gap. If it doesn't, it probably won't run the engine properly.

Try this, too: With the engine running in a barrel, pull the spark plug wires off the plugs, one at a time, using a well-insulated tool. If the engine stops when you pull one off, that cylinder is firing and the other isn't. If the engine keeps running, that cylinder isn't firing.

It's one thing to have a spark in the air, and another to have one under compression. A weak ignition system may not fire under compression.

Frankly, from your description, it sounds like yours is only firing on one cylinder. If so, you may just as well give up.

Re: carb kit for 78' eska 9.9hp ???

well i took er out to the lake today and she didn't run too bad. it won't quite get up to full plane, but really close. not too bad of speed. after motor was fully warmed up and idling nicely at the dock i pulled a plug wire and it died, started it and tried the other and same thing it died. is there any type of cleaning or resetting anything with the ignition you were talking about? i already ordered a carb kit, and even with the speed i got out of her today it will work for me until i can get my old 25hp evinrude going i guess. thanks for your help and were would i find new or used ignition system for this motor? just wish the walleye would have been biting today..
