Have a 1987 70 hp (2 stroke, 3cyl.) Mercury which I have gotten an insanely high quote for carb rebuild. Unfortunately these guys are the only ones around still working on 2 strokes. Can someone let me know how difficult the carb rebuild is if I do it myself and the manual they would reccomend (is Seloc the choice of most?) I am mechanically inclined but this is my first boat, and have limited knowledge of outboard motors. Thanks

That is a pretty simple carb (WME I believe). A factory manual is the best but a Seloc would do. You will need 3 kits. One for each carb.

Where can I find a factory manual? I can only seem to locate Seloc and Clymer manuals.

They want to charge $1500 for carb rebuild (x3), rebuild fuel pump, new oil injection line, new fuel tanks, new fuel line, and waste hazard disposal of old fuel. I imagine there are a couple more things but nothing of consequence. They estimated 10 hours of labor. To me this seems like a huge joke. I'll do it myself, or find someone who can help.

The oldmercs charge $72 per manual. A little pricey. Hopefully one will pop up on eBay

Yeah they are not cheap but remember, you make these repairs and it has paid for itself.

Ouch!! Do they give you a tub of KY along with that? Carb rebuilds are pretty simple, just get the service manual as you will need to link and sync afterwards.
