Carb. Rebuild Tips

I am rebuilding my 2bbl merc. carb. this weekend. Any tips or advice for a first timmer?
Also, the manual says the coating inside the bore, and the paint on the outside, should not be removed.. What can I clean/soak this with that wont also remove these finishes???

Here's a bit of advise. Take it to a pro.
Me and my neighbor tried to rebuild mine (he supposedly had done numerous carbs) and it wouldn't run right when we were done. We played around with it for months. All the while the boat just sat in the yard. We went over the books, internet, talked to the local pro etc etc. Bottom line is I took it off and brought to the pro, had it back in two weeks better than new.
Save yourself alot of heartache. Just my 2 centavos.
There are just too many things to screw up if you don't know what your doing.

Don, it may not be there.. I dont really see anything in there. Manual (clymer) says it has black paint outside (which it does) and a greenish yellow coating inside to prevent corrosion.. BTW, it's on a '93 with the 3.0L and alpha 1.

I have tried to rebuild a merc 2 bbl carb. Gave up and bought reman. We cleaned, soaked and changed parts including float but no luck. Finally bought a remanned and was good to go. The rebuilding was not hard but my understanding is it is tough to get every thing 100% clean

Never mind, if all you have is a Clymer manual, you might as well have a roll of toilet paper. (greenish yellow coating inside to prevent corrosion) Give me a break. That is a layer of BS.

Clymers manuals should be outlawed. Has to be terrorism against boaters why they make all those wierd/stupid statements.

I was rebuilding Solex today and Clymer had picture with accelerator pump spring on wrong side of diafragm. Don't trust it!!! Also picture was missing a lot of parts.

The Only person here that Knows Your Capabilities is You........

If you can Read, have a few tools, understand that Clean, means Clean,......
You can Probably Do It Yourself........

It's also Handy to have access to a Carb Cleaning Tank,+ Compressed Air........

Yes, I have the tools and the smarts.. Just wondering if it's worth the extra $$$ not to deal with it.. i googled remans and found one for $228. Not bad. But since i already paid for the kit, I think I'll give it a try.. if it doesn't work i'm only out $65.

I just rebuilt mine this spring... have done other carbs in past but not that model til now. WELL worth the doing. the instructions that come with the carb were coherent.
Just watch that when you set your float - you measure for the correct spot on the float - varies with model. My Seloc book (yeah, I know) had the same spec as the kit instructions but they measured from a different point - ie. the instructions seemed to differ but actually did not after looking more closely. definitely take your time with it.
I soaked my carb body in Berryman's; but if I had to do again I would use carb/choke cleaner in a metal pail. I didn't think the berrymans was strong enough- it softened paint but did not remove - I had to redo with generic spray carb cleaner and rags.
Things to watch? The accelerator pump was a tight fit unless you lubed with gasoline upon re-assembly. I replaced the skirt and seal but left the original rod intact.
Also the check ball under the venturi cluster was staved too hard. I blasted it clean rather than removing it. Finally be careful removing the venturi cluster - mine was really stuck and it's tempting to use too much force. There are 3 screws on the cluster; note which one gets the gasket washer.
The verdict?
Really glad I did it. I really understand my boat the more I do myself.
Now it runs beautifully. It's still recent so email me if you get stuck.

agreed... it depends what you want to do yourself and if you care about learning more about it... for me, I'm willing to mess up to learn myself... I rebuilt my mercarb myself for the first time (and then 3x more times). Later on, I rebuilt the 700r4 auto tranny in my suburban without knowing what I was doing going into it. But I'm proud of both of those things and know a lot more about boats/trucks now.
