I'm going to replace the carb on my 1987 8hp Mercury with a new carb ment for a 15hp. I've done my home work, I know that it will fit and I know that it will make the motor gain 7hp.

My question is,
How much should I expect to pay for a new carb? Also, can I put it in myself?, I'm not stupid and can figure out normally stuff on my motors, but I'm by far no means an expert.

Thanks,
Ryan

Re: Carb replacement

Hi Ryan,
if you can find a used carb, shouldn't cost a lot.
but marine parts are never really cheap!
are u sure there isn't anything else involved
in the upgrade? isn't exhaust ports diff. on a 15hp?
are l/u and gears same? (prob, but not sure)
maybe you can find a cheap parts motor and
steal the carb?
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: Carb replacement

Ryan

A new carb runs between $150.00-$175.00. Used should be half that.

Re: Carb replacement

mellowyellow,

Yes,
I've looked threw the repair manuals, the only difference between the 8hp,9.9hp and 15hp and the carb sizes.

I also own a "real" 15hp Mercury of the same vintage, I can't see any other differences.

I don't really want to spend $150-$175 on a new carb, I'd like to find a used one.

I have all winter to look for used one's on ebay, if I don't have one by spring I'll break down and buy a new one.

Does anyone have any imput in how big of a job it will be?

Thank you for the replys,
Ryan. :)

Re: Carb replacement

Maybe I'm overlooking something here but -- if you have a 15 hp now, why not pop that carb on the 8 to see what happens???

Re: Carb replacement

My 15hp is a 1990, its mint. Not a scrach on it, the motor has under 30hours on it. It was fired for the very first time last fall.

My 8 has been used a lot its got a **** load of hours in it.

I did not think of swaping the carbs, is it a big job?

Easy job....

You need to buy the mounting gasket. Most likely will tear on removal unless your real careful.

Re: Carb replacement

Have you not considered rebuilding your carb instead? It'll save you over $100.00 from buying a new one. It'll make it like new again.
