I think a carbon fiber powerboat hull would be a big improvement over fiberglass (lower weight, stronger). Has anyone built or researched this material for a boat hull?
How about a carbon fiber propeller?
I don't know if anyone could afford one if it were built, but just tought I'd ask.

Re: Carbon Fiber ?

Yes it would be. A lot of race boats are all or part carbon fiber. Its just more expensive. Some of the large America's Cup sailboats are almost entirely carbon and carbon/Kevlar layups. Very strong, very light, very expensive. The Stealth Fighter jet (F-somethingorother) and B2 Bomber are made of carbon fiber. Formula 1 and Indy race car chassis are carbon fiber. Lance Armstrongs bicylce is carbon fiber, so is my tennis racket.

Most boats are made of Fiberglass and polyester resin because the cost/strength/weight ratio is good.

You can make a better boat by varying the fiber reinforcement using different types of glass, less matt, more cloth, S-glass etc. or going to other composites, Kevlar, Spectra, or Carbon fiber.

You can make a better boat by using a better matrix than polyester. Epoxy is stronger but is more expensive.

It all depends on the use. Are you going fishing or are you making doors for the Space Shuttle?

Re: Carbon Fiber ?

For a boat I think you could only go with a mix as the impact resistance of carbon fibre is too low. That is to say, it tends to shatter rather than bend under the force of impact. The thing about it is, when you mix say kevlar and carbon fibre for impact resistance, when the impact is taken the carbon fibers tend to break. So there is permanent damage from the impact although it doesn't hole the boat.

But the fact it's 4x the price or so is the overriding factor, I think.

So - as Monoshock says - what about carbon fibre props?

Anyone any thoughts on that?
