I am planning a carb rebuild on my 1993 48HP Johnson outboard. I have never been into a carb before, much less two of them. Any tips and tricks pf the trade would be appreciated.

Re: Carburetor rebuild

Study the linkage really good or better yet take a picture of it before you pull it off.

Work on one carbs at a time and keep the cover screw with the jet so you don't get them mixxed up.

On mine there is a jet at the topfront of the carb(idle) one at the back top of the carb(mid and one in the float bowl behind the drain plug, you will need a really skinny screw driver to get this one out, don't go too small since the jet is hollow, if you strip it you are screwed.

Once you get the jets out run a stripped stranded copper wire through the jets a couple times to get them clean.

I use air in a can to blow out the passages.
reassemble and you are done.

If you plan on doing maintenance work by yourself and particularly those involving adjustments, I strongly recommend to get an OEM wokshop manual.
Try e-Bay, Marineengine.com, Ken Cook.
That $50 spent will be quickly saved in costly mistakes!!!

Thanks for the tips on the carb rebuild, I do have the service and maintenance manual. OK, I will bite, what is the "Secret File" I am supposed to read?
