Hey guys,

Anyone into Carp fishing? They are quite easy to catch and give one hell of a fight. A good alternative when the Bass are not biting :)

Yeh....enjoyed carp fishing when I was younger, not much around these areas where I'm at now. I used canned corn on a #6 hook with a Zebco 202. Throw a handfull of corn chum out and hold on.

What do you guys use for bait?

I make my own bait, basically it is a cornbread mix scented with powder sugar, or vanilla. Works really well.

We use to use velvita cheese for trout and caught quite a few carp. So when ever saw a lot of carp would reload with velvita cheese and just fly line it.
I love hooking those big suckers.....

Have not heard of the cheese technique, that's great. Carp sweep the bottom and suck in all kinds of stuff, than spitting out any debris. They are attracted by smell, similar to any other freshwater fish, but not as advanced as Catfish. I found that sweet smells and aromas worked the best for me, such as Vanilla or powder sugar.

At the marinas at lake mead or havasu you can throw popcorn out and the carp will suck it right off the top of the water. And some of those carp are in the 20 to 30pd. weight but no fishing allowed there.

I prefer to bowfish for them. Its a blast to try and hit them. The water refraction is very deceiving. Granted you can't throw them back this way, but they make excellent fertilizer.

Ive seen a few people doing that here, especially around spawning as carp come into the shallow and splash/jump non-stop.

Use about anything for carp bait, worms, corn, corn cobs, dough balls, even bean pods. As for eatting them I have the best recipe, dig hole about 10 inches deep, fill in place tomato plant in dirt, some of the best tomatos you can eat. lol

Re: Carp anglers?

Grandpa taught me how to cook carp, actually pretty good.

Take a hickory board...put it on the grill with a whole carp on top.....when done, throw the carp away and eat the hickory board.

Another note, really, we were fishing for carp at sunset. 6lb test with a small hook. We were using Mexican canned corn with palmetto peppers (all I had) and landed my biggest bass at the time....estimated at 8 pounds. A couple of nights later we were bass fishing in another nearby pond using a jitterbug lure. Big ol' bass hit that thing and lept out of the water a few feet. I visioned my first 10 pounder. Was a 20# carp.

I've been known to things bassackwards.
