ST. LOUIS -- Crazy carp have invaded Missouri's rivers.

Two species of nonnative carp have been jumping into boats, injuring occupants and damaging the watercraft.

A state fisheries biologist motoring near Columbia had a filling knocked out of his tooth by a high-flying fish that struck him on the side of the head. Another state biologist in the St. Charles area was seriously hurt when he was hit by a giant carp.

Missouri Department of Conservation said the big head carp and silver carp were brought to private fish hatcheries from Asia by the aquaculture industry. They were intended to eat excess algae and waste in aquaculture ponds - which grow fish for food as well as bait and tropical fish. But they escaped in floodwaters in 1993, 1995 and 2002.

They are safe to eat, but ecologically they could damage the mussel population and are competing with native fish for food. We are going to hear more and more over the next few years about the problems these fish are causing, especially injuries to boaters and anglers.''

The carp have been spotted in many of Missouri's rivers, including throughout the Missouri River.

The sound of a propeller under water makes these fish go crazy,'' Todd said. The fish don't jump if you're sitting there without the motor on, but the higher the RPMs, the greater the noise, the higher these fish jump.''

Yup.. we have em.

My boss here at work is a river fisher... was was telling me about them one day. Our boss from Atlanta was in, didn't believe the story until he took him out on the river to show him.

...When he gets back, I'll post a picture of one that jumped in his boat. We was on the radio last week when they were doing a story about it.

Most of these carp are 10-30 lbs, but some as big as 75. They somehow are triggered to jump, by the sound of boat engines.

They have made it all the way up the Chicago River, and are approx 40 miles from Lake Michigan.
This will devestate the entire Great Lakes fishery and eco system if the get in. Much worse than the goobies and zebras.

THe blathering idiot politicians don't see a reason to block off the canal that connects the lake to the river.
They grow fast.
Suck up the spawn and algae/plankton. The fry that do hatch have no plankton to eat. The water is cleaner, so the sunlight penetrates to new depths, and weed growth accellerates.

Another government "expert's" experiment gone wrong. This is the thing that had me questioning the grass carp in California.

I can't wait to see the "waterskier safety cage" the gov't mandates us to use now. Can you imagine skiing along and getting hit in the chest by a 40 carp?

You guys got some crazy fish there. Instead of a
fishing rod, sounds like you'll need to carry a
good fish whacker.

get the net....over 2,000 supposedly sterilized asian grass carp have been released in our lake this year to control hydrilla. the story goes that the hydrilla was brought to the lake on various trailers and now the carp will keep it under control.

could be kinda fun if you can find a helmet or something

I saw the news coverage on the weather channel of all places. I have never seen anything like it.

My 2 cents, it is never a good idea to bring in a foreign species. You never know what might happen.

Re: Carp jumping into boats in Missouri

Since I am the resident carp "expert", I will give my take on this:
Carp are really smart creatures, so in reality, there are a couple of things they are trying to do when you see this happen. First, they are trying to breed with the human females in the boat..........oh its true, because thats what they told me. So hide you wife while you are boating in carp infested waters. Second, they are probably trying to steal your boat when they jump in it. You will usually notice that one carp will jump on the Captain of said boat, while the other one grabs the steering wheel and hits the throttle.
Oh, and remember, whatever happens, don't give in to their sexual advances............. yes we all know they have purty lips, but you have to resist.

Now you know why I shoot them suckers when I get a chance. I can honestly say that I have never had my boat stolen by a carp.

I know that this is all pretty scientific information, but remember, I do have a Masters degree in "Carpetology". :D

Calling all cars... be on the lookout for a boat last seen headed south. Perps are to be considered dangerous do not confront. Description given by former pilot and current owner, the one at the wheel has a big head with purdy lips and the one on the throttle has a silver coloration also has purdy lips. Weight of both eastimated to be between 20 and 40 lbs each. The owners wife is also in the boat however at this time it is still undetermined if she is a willing participant that has had previous 'contact' with the carp or a hostage to be assulted later.

Good video link - you have to see the one where the carp whacks the lady off the head though... too funny. She doesn't expect it and I bet she messed her pants!
