Carpet is nice in a Bass boat for sound absorption, nicer yet on a party barge for ease on the feet and general good looks. However, for a fishing boat or one that my not be protected from the elements.....a professional laid bed liner can not be beat. It will maintain a waterproof barrier to the underdeck, a firm underfoot and muffle sound. Weight should not be a problem on larger craft. Colors may be a problem. Consult your neighborhood bed liner installer.

Durabak is a great product!

You can see results on my project thread below.

First thing I did with my Hurricane snap-in carpet, was remove it!

Did carpet in my last boat. Hated it. Definitely going with either marine vinyl or some type of non-skid coating for the current project. Overtons has their own rubberized coating that's available in a number of colors.

I also recommend Nautolex textured vinyl flooring. Good traction, easy scrub-down, durable, non absorbant.....I recently added new marine plywood floor panels to a small boat. Before installation, I covered them with the glued-on vinyl. This is a great solution for replacing flooring carpet, especially if the flooring is in removable sheet (plywood) form. A removed panel is a breeze to handle as far as gluing, wrapping, and stapling is concerned. More complicated jobs where the material "wraps" around complex curves would be a pain, IMO.

Re: carpet or????

After having a carpeted boat for 26 years, we bought one with snap out carpet. 1st time on the water with the carpet in I unsnapped it and stowed it to see which way I liked best.

Its in the basement now and won't be going back in, cooler floors (textured white fiberglass) and cleanup with a hose and scrub brush. There is still some carpet under the consoles and gunwales (sides) but it doesn't get dirty and wet. Not sure why they put carpet in now but we like ours without.

Bear,

Has the Durabak stained? It looks like you got it to apply evenly.

I installed a similar material, Tuff Coat, from Cabelas and it started out good but it seems the grime has imbedded in the surface.

The problems I had with it are:
1) The rubber texture sank fairly fast in the pan so the texture was uneven.
2) Hot to bare feet, sand color.
3) The clumpy texture not comfortable to bare feet
4) Doesn't totally clean and has gotten dingy over time.

However, this stuff has stuck hard on the gel and high pressure washer won't touch it.

Re: carpet or????

Durabak is awesome.

If I did it again I would have made the first coat of three textured, and the following two coats non-textured. Didn't feel bad on the feet never got hot. was easy to apply, the texture was very consistent, very strong and seems indestructible. The three coats of texture seemed to hold dirt, but with a broom, scrub brush and a hose, cleaning was a breeze! If it was dirty, simply cleaning with deck wash would bring the white back. I only had the boat for one season, and I'm particular how I keep my boat. I feel the current owners will have years of luck with this product.

Bear,

Forgot to compliment you work..beautiful!

With the Durabak, is the texture added separately, so that the 2nd and 3rd coats can be applied w/o?

Bear..how much did it cost you to lay down the Durabak and have the snap in carpet made?
