Re: Carpet replacement...

Good thing to think about--my neighbor said not to use rubber backed as well--so we'll see what we can get--seems the adhesive is the most important part of the process.

Absolutely! especially when dealing with salt water. adhesives are adversly affected by salts. rubber backed carpet was the likely culprit that rotted out the sole of my boat. the rubber is similar to foam rubber=sponge...bad news imo. many methods will be adequate. my suggestion to use urethane mastic would be the forever method. if the hull split in two, the carpet would hold it together. if semi-permanent would suit your needs, use a premium grade indoor/outdoor adhesive. 15 years later you will be able to remove the worn/faded carpet. with the urethane you can still remove it...in 1" strips using vise grips while swearing through the entire process. consider how long you would like for it to remain in the boat. that will determine the proper adhesive.

Where can you find 20oz marine carpet with no rubber backing? I can't seem to find any without rubber backing?

Do you know if it's the thin stuff or thicker? I tried to see on line if it was 16oz or 20oz--but it doesn't say.

Re: Carpet replacement...

its quite thin

I was thinking that--I suppose the only reason I am looking for 20oz is as soon as I get on the boat the shoes come of:) but I may just end up getting what I can get easy and cheap--because the 20yr old carpet in the boat now is just flying off in chunks when I run the boat.

I had EXCELLENT results with 3M super 90. Spray one side, spray the floor, press it down, dry in 10 minutes and it's a bear to get off. I HIGHLY recommend it.

YES...3m is the way to go and its in a spray!!!!

Yep--I agree--although I have access to 1300l or 1357 which is used in aviation--basically the same as the super 90--any of the 3m stuff is awesome.

Re: Carpet replacement

Would that mean; asuming you decide to use a permanant adhesive that you could never replace your carpet?

Nope, you can always replace your carpet... and always find a way to remove it and the glue/carpet residue.

I agree. On mine this will probably be the only time I replace in this boat. The current carpet is 20 years old and is the first time it is being replaced. Hopefully I will have a new boat before I have to change it again:)

Re: Carpet replacement

Friday will be my last trip to the lake this year so i will be taking pictures in the coming days of the before and after. I can't wait to get started (other than the cost) I plan on spending about 1K on carpet, seats, livewell pump, new bildge pump, and misc. I just cross my fingers I will have it done by this spring (wife and money permitting)

Re: Carpet replacement

Got my carpet today 6x21ft for $118. It is marine carpet and has a light rubber backing. Got if from a local mom and pop store. It is 20oz which surprised me. Not sure the manufacturer. I did get my neighbors discount off of the $9 per sqr yrd. If the weather is nice I'll start getting pictures of the boat and load them here. Looks like the boat will be an all winter into spring thing as I won't be able to do the main part of the boat until it warms up.
