I Need to change the propshaft on a 1985 18hp merc. just wondering what is the process for me to get to the gears.lol

Remove the spark plug wires, the prop and hardware with the appropriate tool unscrew the carrier ( LH threads) and pull the shaft out.

Is the carrier bearing threaded? or do i just try to pull it out with a slide hammer??

K guys I got it off. I made the tool for the removal with a piece of pipe and rebar for a handle. My next question is that in the bottom half of the housing there is a little round metal nipple. Does anyone know why that is there? It is located on the bottom of the housing about half way in and sticks out on an angle about 1/4-3/8th of an inch. Is this some sort of alignment pin.

Never mind I found out it was the drain plug. This is my first time into a mercury lower unit they are pretty interesting.
