Carrier Housing Help

When I removed my carrire housing in my OMC I noticed the 4 screws that attach it were stripped. I know this is not normal but where can I get the screws with the seals that go on them? and are there any tricks to getting the old prop shaft gasket out with nicking or screwing up the carrier housing. Clarify please... the screws themselves were stripped or they came out with aluminum goulded to the threads?

The 4 o -rings u can probably get with a seal kit. How'd the bolts get stripped?

16Pilot,<br /><br />Either the screws stripped going in or out .I don't think it matters.You need new screws with seals,plus parts for what ever you are doing.You also need a new retainer plate which is what these screws go into.It might be a problem,as the plate is held in by 2 nasty snap rings,if you don't have the right tool.Oh,the screws are stainless and the plate is steel.<br /><br />Hagerstown doesn't ring a bell right now,so I need more info to advise you where to obtain parts.<br /><br />DHP

Hagerstown, MD Where do I find the tool for the large snap rings? I am not sure how the screws got stripped? That is what they looked like when I removed them. Thanks for the replies.

I'd just visit the local dealer and order what I need.For a fee he may even remove the snap rings for you.The tool is over $100 as I recall,but he can also order that for you.<br /><br />DHP

You need a pair of snap ring pliers. U can pick up a pair at many parts stores. I've seem 'em for a lot less than $100! Be careful when removing the snap rings, wear goggles. If the ring gets away form u it can take an eye out. DH, I was just curious how the bolts got stripped. I don't know where u get your tools, but telling the guy to order a pair of snap ring pliers from a dealer is bad advice. They'll charge him 5 times what they're worth.

Those carrier screws are threaded into the steel plate ahead of the snap rings. If they are stripped, then someone really "reefed" down on them at one time. <br /><br />New screws are included in the factory gearcase seal kit, and you may have to order a new steel plate after you inspect it.

well they are really big snap rings and the factory set i use to use has a threaded rod and nob to hold the ring<br /><br />even and aftermarket set is going to be pretty big and need to have a locking and release feature to control the ring<br /><br />tommays

I will try my best to inspect the steel plate to see if it is stripped. My parts come in today. I am hoping that since the the screws are a lighter material that it just messed the screws up and not the steel plate. One more question, should the shaft move around alot without the carrier housing being in there and what is the best way to get the old prop shaft seal out without damaging the housing? Thanks for all of the help guys.

Good luck with the plate and screws. <br /><br />The prop shaft does move around a little with the carrier housing off.<br /><br />I destroyed the old seals with a punch and sort off twisted them out with pliers.<br /><br />Be sure to use some sealer around the outside edge of the new seals when installing them.
