Hey guys, got a call last night from a friend of a friends saying he was rebuilding his Carter 2 barrel and had lost the instructions. He still has the float gauge but doesn't know what height to set it. Anyone know?

It's going to take a lot more information than "Carter 2 barrell" to get the proper number. Things like engine make, year, model number etc.

Don, I'm going to send you a new polishing cloth for your crystal ball, or did you throw it against the wall?
Supposively, the boat is an '84 with a Merc 140. Thanks for the help Don.

Didn't have to throw it against the wall, it was wore out from excessive use. Split right down the middle. UGLY site to see.

Houstin, we have a problem!
Mercruiser only used either a Rochester or a Mercarb, you have a possible AUTOMOTIVE carb there.

I guess I gotta go look at it to verify what the guy has told me. I'll do it in the morning. Thanks Don

Well it looks like it's a Merc carb. Tag on carb says
MCM 120-140
1389-8490
3Y02
Any info will help, Thank You

Taking this right from the Merc service manual for the 1389-8490 carb.

Float Level.
(Note 2)= Measurement is taken from gasket. Fuel inlet needle is spring loaded. Before checking, raise float and allow to fall by iself. DO NOT FORCE downward by hand.

(Note 3)
Sprin loaded needle: 5/8"
Solid needle: 1/4"

Float Drop. (See Note 2 above) 1-3/4"

Choke Unloader .080

Idle Mixture screw preliminary setting 1-1/4 Turns.
