Has anyone had any problems with the aftercooler failing in the 3196 Caterpillar marine engine?

Now this is an engine! In addition to turbocharging, some engines are also aftercooled. To lower the air temperature and make it denser, the air is sent from the turbocharger to the aftercooler for cooling. Engine coolant flowing through interior tubes of the aftercoooler cools and "shrinks" the air so more can be packed into the combustion chamber. There are also air-to-air aftercoolers, which use ambient air for cooling. Can you be more specific about your problem? Are you leaking?

Being that the engine would have a closed cooling system, did the failure manifest itself by a coolant leak?

Was it corrosion related?

Are the Ph levels in your cooling system OK?

I believe the aftercoolers on those 3196's are seawater cooled, not part of the closed cooling system..

What led to it's failure (heat, corrosion), and what were the results of the failure? Did the aftercoolers failure cause catastrophic engine failure?

What is the model year of the engine in question, and what horsepower please?
