Am thinking about downsizing some and was wondering what your thoughts are about a CC boat.
18' front and rear fishing decks, rod storage livewells.
Aluminum or glass.
What say you all.
Freshwater only.

Re: CC question

I prefer CC boats, Spinner.

You probably know that my favorite is the classic (pre-2000) Boston Whaler Montauk 17 with a front pedestal seat added. This was my 1981 Montauk with grandson Jake. It now belongs to Ryanwhaler.

Re: CC question

I'm new in owning a boat but I'll throw my opinion in. I have a Key West 1520CC awith a Yamaha 70 2-stroke and really like it. The CC is good for getting all around to fish and I can fish in 1ft of water. So far I've only been in brackish/fresh water in the St John's river. The KW seems good quality. I don't have any experience with aluminum. Mine's smaller than 18' but KW makes some around 17-18 ft that looked nice to me. I would have gone bigger but it wouldn't fit in my garage! Good luck.

Re: CC question

I am going tomorrow to look at a new Angler 17'cc. A center console boat will be new to me, it will replace a 16' bowrider i have had for years.
According to cc owners, wondering what the most important features are on their boats, what features are hit or miss and which features they didnt need at all. Thanks

Re: CC question

CC's are great if rough water and bad weather are not factors where you fish. 99% of the time we fished off the back so look for room back there if that's how you fish. For us the front was wasted space , have a W/A now.
Best advice I can give you is hire a surveyor if you're looking at a used boat , wish I did a couple times. Good luck and stay safe .

Re: CC question

The boat i will be looking at is new. 99% of the time spent on the boat is fishing. The bow rider i have now is a good boat but fishing is not its strongest feature.

Re: CC question

IMO, a CC is more universal than any other boat. I got rid of a 24' and picked up a 16' a few months ago. Have had BRs, cuddys, and speed boats, but I always keep at least one CC. Do mostly fresh water but go to the bay every now and then. I like standing (safely) if I want while driving and the visability. I like my weight being centered in the boat. I like the low draft and light weight. I like hosing the inside down with a hose to clean it with no carpet and minimal vinyl. I have a foot controlled trolling motor up front for bass fishing, but just enough bow rise and freeboard to handle a little rough stuff. I have a custom seat just for the wife for cruising and a gas grill to boot. With other styles, the design is pretty much laid out for you. With CCs, the open set-up allows you to customize it any way you want. Just my $.02, but gotta love the CCs! Good luck!

I have to agree with Fishman

I have to agree with Fishman

I've owned a 19' ProLine for the last 4 years and wouldn't have anything else. The boat does everything well enough to be an all-around boat. It fishes well both on rivers, in lakes and on the ocean. It's fast enough to get the speed rush, (52 is fine with me), it pulls the kids great on a tube, It has lots of room and lots of capacity. All the reasons Fish gave and more. It'll fish in 18" of water or handle 4' waves offshore if it has too. (I've been in 6's and it wasn't fun, but I made it home.) I've fished salt marshes and I've been 20 miles offshore in the Gulf.
The only reservation I have is the size- I want a 24' ride but they shoot up in price BIG time once you hit the 22' mark.

I'd like to have a 24' Mako...

Re: CC question

I love the lines and looks of a CC but regretfully came to the conclusion it wouldn't make a good replacement for our 17 foot SeaRay bowrider. Probably because I cruise and tube and never fish.

On our test rides with the family it became clear there was no wind or weather protection for anyone but the helmsman and one other. Those in the rear couldn't see past the console and those in the front couldn't really sit comfortably. So, we ended up with a Scout Dorado dual console instead. It's got the other characteristics of a cc I like (outboard, no carpet, self bailing, "unsinkable", light weight and lots of storage) but a more "comfortable" layout for the family.

Still, when a slick CC goes by I always turn my head. I might take up fishing just to have an excuse for next time...;)

Re: CC question

I guess what i am wondering about is when the salesperson is trying to sell the boat to me, what features do you think i should be most interested in, and what features do you think are least important considering the boat will be used mainly for fishing based on your experience. Thanks

Why would you hire a surveyor?

What kind of surveyor?

Like JB, I love whalers. So the answer to any good question is usually Boston Whaler.

But since most of my experience is by doing and not by verbalizing, (especially with such an intellectual group) what is a CC?

Re: CC question

another reason i liked my CC was the security feeling of having the lower deck. getting older we are not as stable on our feet, at times it is nice to be able to grab the gunnel, for balance, for than be overboard. especially when you fish with Sylvia. she moves quickly without warning, and will throw your kiester, in the water in a heartbeat. i also love my wireless trolling motor, no foot control or cables to trip over, and being able to control the boat from any point. i would still have it, except a guy in South America, offered me toooooo much $$$.

it is a totally different experience, rent one for a day.

Re: CC question

A 20 year old Whaler in good shape is a better boat than most new ones and about half the price. More important, in 10 years it will be worth more than it is now.
