cd16 throttles up in barrel but not in lake

I have a cd16 that will churn all the water out of my test barrel and really rev up like a scalded dog. I put it in the lake, and it will not take off, even when I drive it up to the trailer it wont even push the boat up to the bow stop on the trailer. It will purr like a kitten all day long at slow speed and doesn't skip, miss or anything.I can start it and twist the handle to "fast" and it just revs up a little and just putters around. I have all new coils, plugs, plug wires, points and condenser, rebuilt the carb. with a new float, have converted to a fuel pump. I have ac/delco plugs in it could they be the problem?? The points are set to .20 and the plugs are gapped to .30

Sounds like it's running on one cylinder even though you replaced the ignition. While running, try unhooking one wire at a time, does the speed drop evenly or does it die when one is pulled. That'll tell you if it's firing on 1 or 2 cylinders.

AC plugs or any other brand are not the problem. Unless you have some wierd type in there that is way incorrect---like too long or heat range way off, or something.

Even a sicko motor will slosh the water out of a barrel. There is no load put on the motor from all that churning water that is full of air.

Check head gasket - will mimic loss of spark in one cylinder. Will show as water beading on the plug electrode...

Recommended plugs are Champion J6C ... the AC Delco equivalent is M44C (although that does not necessarily mean they would be the best choice of AC Delco plugs)

It's not a very powerful engine. Are you expecting too much from it?

What kind of load are you pushing with it ??? There is no real load in a barrel other than the water resistance.

Re: cd16 throttles up in barrel but not in lake

Just pulled the bottom plug...had a little particle of carbon grounding it out. Am going to the lake to test again, and taking a plug wrench so I can "clean the plug" again when and if it happens ..When I replaced the head gasket,I cleaned the top of the pistons.and of course I cleaned the head and polished it flat with some 400 grit paper to make sure it was absolutly flat and true. It wasn't when I started out. Could the carbon be coming from the bottom of the cylinders back thru the exhaust ports? I cleaned them as good as I could.

Anything is possible especially if there is still some junk in there. Good Luck at the lake and let us all know how you make out.

O.K. This little motor had me more confused than a nursing baby in a topless bar, but the whole problem was a little flake of carbon on the lower spark plug. I cleaned it and now she runs like a scalded dog!! Thanks for all the tips!! These little motors are great, and the same age as me!!

Glad to hear it. Monitor those plugs though each time out.
