Hi Guys,

I want to change the lower unit oil on my outboard and I do not have a manual for the motor. I'm guessing 1 and 3 are what I need to unscrew to change the oil. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, can anyone tell me what is 2 and 4 are for?

1 is fill, 2 is vent. (or possibly the other way--it should be marked on the leg) 3 is drain. Do not touch 4. It is the pivot pin for the shift yoke and should NEVER be removed except when disassembling the lower unit.

To change the oil open 1,2, and 3 with the engine vertical let all the oil drain. close 3. fill through 1 until oil comes out 2. let stand for about 1/2 hour to let any air rise and top off through 1 until oil again flows out 2. Tighten all plugs firmly.

Best to use marine grade lower unit oil. It comes in various weights AND also synthetic. Choose whether you want the expensive brand or generic Wal Mart Super Tech. Auto rear end hypoid oil is acceptable, but marine grade has more emulsifiers and corrosion inhibitors.

Although Frank is the man with this stuff, I have moved this over to the Force section to get you a more focused response and keep it in the right place for the archives. Good luck!

Thanks Frank for replying. Do you think I should use the 80w-90 or higher. Some people told me 80W-90 is a little thin for a lower unit.

I think I use a 75-90, it is the standard quicksilver lowerunit oil. It is dark green so I can see if any water is getting into the lower unit.
