Re: Chainsaw opinions

SS Mayfloat,

Go with the Stihl, when I worked for the Federal Gov. in Australia their preferred chainsaw or weedeater were Stihls as they were the only make that stood up to the incredible misuse that was handed out to them by some of our employees, I have seen units run in dust without airfilters, incorrect oil and fuel mixes, you name it, these blokes have done it. My brother inlaw ran his Stihl weedeater for 10 years on TCW-2 outboard oil without knowing he should have used the correct aircooled oil, now 18 yrs old still going. I run Stihl chainsaws and weedeaters, both nearly 20 yrs old still going strong, as a matter of interest a lot of the chainsaw motors were made in the USA don't know if this is still the case.

Bob

Re: Chainsaw opinions

Sthil. I bought one (029 Super Ranch Boss) because I have a friend that is a professional timber faller (Crane Mills).
He uses Sthil as do most of the other fallers around here. He has a couple of racing models that he competes with also.

The Huskies these days have one compression ring. The Sthil has two.

I cut about three cord of oak and black walnut a year and this will be my last saw I will have to buy.

Re: Chainsaw opinions

Thanks shipmates for the information and opinions. Returned from a nightout on the boat and checked the responses.

Went out and bought a Stihl MS310, 59cc, with a 20" and 24" bar.

Am I satisfied? Oh Yeah Baby! :D

Salesman said the 24 is the largest bar that it will accept and that it may be actually underpowered for it. But it did just great.

Gonna have to get another throwaway saw to use in the bucket truck, the Stihl is just too big to be using in it.

The price was pretty decent. 3 20" chains/1 bar, 1 24"chain/1 bar, Carrying case, 6 pk oil, 1 gal bar oil, plus the saw for $394 and some change.

Did I do Good? :D .....SSM

I might be pursuaded to part with my Stihl 045 super. 36" bar, extra chains, etc...
It's an oldie, but runs good and will tackle the trees the little saws can't touch.

I don't burn wood anymore. My back just won't handle it. I sure loved burning wood.

Anyhow...if anyone is interested, drop me an e-mail. I can send pics.

Sale or trade...Waddya got?

I'm always looking for computer parts (Asus motherboards, high-end video cards etc...)

homerr999@msn.com

H.

Any of the saws with ball bearings for the crank are good. Instead of sleeve. Not sure if they still do, but for a while Stihl made a cheapee promo saw with sleeve bearings--and all the rest of their line was top quality ball bearings. You can always tell by the price. If it sounds too cheap, it probably is.

Husky is a good saw as well. A good saw will last forever under the load of a few cords of firewood every year, and a 20" bar is as big as you would ever need in most cases. You can cut a 3 ft diameter log with that, and I'd hate to have to split anything that size anyway.

Re: Chainsaw opinions

I've owned Sears (made by Poulan then, I think) and worked on Macs, Homelite, and now have a Stihl 034SEQ which is a Porsche of saws--has a magnesium engine for lightweight and can saw all day after starting with one pull. It's pricey for homeowners--paid over $500 back in 1989, but I'll never have to buy another saw. A good saw is an investment in safety since it will do the job right and quickly without tiring you out so much you start making dumb moves. Get the proper safety gear, you won't regret it-boots, chaps, etc.

Re: Chainsaw opinions

Another vote for husky. The boys and I at the hunting lodge tackle quite a few cord a year, and the old stihls we had have not lived up to the newer huskies.

Honorable mention goes to a twenty year old 18" homelite that I have. Always took a cheap attitude towards it since it's a cheap saw, but it has earned respect. I never took care of it, beat the pi$$ out of it, and it fires right up, cuts a ton of wood, and the chain stays sharp. Cost less than half of my buddies now dead 18" stihl when we bought them new at the same time and I was a poor 20 year old. Mine was used a lot more than his, and he had his "professionally" maintained... makes me wonder.

Go with the stihl or huski

i have two stihls and 2 huskies

stihl
o26
o23
huski
Rancher 55
261

no problems with huskies

jsut if you can git these where you live and get parts easily.

Warning, huski makes the 136 and 141, bottom end of the line do not get them unless you are only going to us it once a year. but the bigger saws are fine.

I vote for the 55 Rancher

hope this helps

one problem with the o23, bought it used and had to have carb tuned up, since runs like a dream.
