My cousin and I - both decent backyard mechanics- are stumped. I say one thing he says another. Here is the issue-- I have gone thru 3 electric fuel pumps in 3 weeks feeding a 1998 Mercruiser 4.3 V6 4bbl. The original pump, a replacement and then another replacement- it is gettingexpensive at $225 apiece. Looks like I need another.

I say we have a short somewhere. He says the fuel is siphoning back ( after 2 days of not running it- on both of the replacement tests) which is being caused by an air leak- leaving the electric pump not primed. It ran great after each new fuel pump was installed- took it out for 3 hrs both times. It ran a little rough but was getting gas into the carb. At that point thought I had a carb rebuild issue.

We just spent 4 hrs in the driveway- willing to do more -But can anyone point us in a direction?

There are 2 things that is really hard on those pumps. Water and air.
You can check your filters for water, but hard to check them for air leaks unless you try this.

My guess, is you are sucking air or cavitating the pump. The gauge will tell.

Thanks Don. The method you recommend says I need to get the boat running. Cant do that. Currently I am not getting gas to the carb because I think the fuel pump died again- hence my question as to why I am going thru some many. Someone suggested I pressure drain the tank and clean it thoroughly, then try a new fuel pump. The tank was built new in 2003, but fuel did sit in there for 2 yrs unused before I bought it. I have been using the boat for approx 20 hrs until i started to go thru fuel pumps.
Do you think cleaning the new tank will help?

The spin on fuel filter (if you have one) should protect the pump from trash

Does the tank have and anti sphion valve ?

You will need to get a working pump and then test ASAP to find the problem before it eats the pump
