Change out tire on the road

Sorry, another newbie question...

I'm curious how one goes about changing a tire on his/her trailer. Our Shorelandr's frame sits about 17" off the ground. What kind of jack do you use, and where is the jacking point on the trailer?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Navy,
I just use the bottle jack that came with my truck, put it under the axle as close to the tire as possible with out interfearing with it.
that way you just jack up the axle NOT the whole boat.

I carry a bottle jack also. You might want to throw in a piece of 2 by 6 or 2by 8 for cribbing. Soft shoulders will sometimes let you jack the jack far enough into the ground that it will not lift the axle high enough. Play with the tire/axle at home on a good day. It might surprise you as to what size of jack you need. Some won't go low enough and some won't go high enough.

I carry a scissor jack from a previous vehicle. Works well for what I need. If you are in doubt as to the height you need carry some suitable wooden "packing" (2 X 6 or 2 X 8) to go under the jack.

they come in different sizes, you place it under the axle, the put the tow vehicle in reverse, and apply a little pressure, and the good tire rolls, and the jack swivels the axle and bad tire up off the ground.

Thanks for the feedback. Do they work well ?? seems like a really quick way to get that wheel in the air and changed out while in the usual "vulnerable position" on the side of the highway.

never saw one of those seasense jacks either. pretty neat. i carry a small floor jack & a piece of 2 x 8. used it yesterday. fortunately my tire held on (after losing most of the tread on the highway) & got me to a wal mart where i bought the last 5 lug, 12.30 x 10. changed it right in the lot. Very Lucky Yesterday!!!
p/s i always carry a spare as well, but bought a new one anyway.

A bottle jack and several small pieces of 2x6 and 2x8 boards. Those can be very valuable when the conditions suck.

I bring jack stands to put under the trailer after I jack it up.

Be prepared with the basics. Wheel chucks, floor jack/or any other jack you think of., and jack stands. I also have fix a flat, but that is only used to bring up a flat tire if I need to only go a very short distance or if I want to lift the trailer before jacking. I also carry a lighter powered pump and a spare ready to go. Also, two lug nut wrenches, (dont ask me why, I just do-one is a four prong and the other is a single).

Re: Change out tire on the road

I use the bottle jack that came with my truck. It is just a little too high for the axle but works great on the frame just behind the axle. I used to carry jack stands and a floor jack in my old truck but I still don't want to beat up my 'new' Silverado and the way gas prices have gone in the last few years had made me reconsider how necessary things I carry with me are. I used to store my bearing packer and a spare hub in the toolbox on the truck as well, now I just have one on the spare and a set of pre-greased bearings in a zip lock baggy in the small boat tool box along with a mini grease gun. One thing I do carry is two chunks of 2x4, one for under the jack if I need it, and one for beating things (bearing seals, bearing buddies, etc) on with.

Instead of jack stands I like to pull the bum wheel off and slide it under the axle just out of the way (I try to jack just high enough). If it falls of the jack then I am covered. That gives me time to get the new hub on or pack and replace the bearings and at worst I am out one spare. With the mileage I put on it (160+ miles to my closest 'summer' lake, one way) I end up replacing the tires long before they get a chance to break down due to age, its just the odd wheel bearing disintegration mid season that catches my by surprise. I guess its one of those false economies that I should just toss em every 2 years or so, its just they usually go for 3-4 at least, its just that odd year where one goes even after inspecting and repacking them. I had one go this weekend so I should be good for another 3 seasons, which reminds me to go pick up a new spare set this week...

Well if u have a dual axle like i do. Theres a part that looks like a half moon. ( cant remember the name) You can use it as a wheel chock or place it under the inflated tire. Drive on it which will then lift the deflated one for you to change.
