Hi Guys,
Firstly I must say that this forum has been a godsend on a couple of previous issues on my Chrysler 1973 1359HG.
First problem was the starter, followed up by the infamous power tilt problems that seem to be a curse for this engine.
I nearly bought one of those crappy chinese hydraulic pump until I read up on them here. (got the new suggested Mallory)

Onto today's pickle. I haven't run the engine for a few months so I was doing the usual prestart. New Fuel, clean the plugs, inspect the engine.
When I pulled out the third plug there was what looked like rust on the top of the plug. Never seen a rusty sparkplug in an engine before. This is what prompted the closer inspection. I discovered the lead looked cracked and burnt. Attached photos.

So I cleaned out the cap with some contact cleaner, fired up the motor and it seemd to run well. Spark on plug etc.
Last time I rushed into a repair on this engine was Disastrous.
A quick inspection of what looks like some sort of distributor cap (but Isnt I'm sure) led me to believe this is going to be trickier than first though. two hours trolling here and going through the manual havent achieved and solid results.

Some assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

So, What is your question? Do you want to know how to change the plug wires? If so, first note the orientation of the wires in the cap. Firing order is 1324 with 1 as the top cylinder.

The wires themselves are held in the cap by a compressed rubber seal which also makes the distributor explosion proof.

Now, remove the wires from the plugs and remove the distributor cap. Outside the cap near the center are two round head slotted screws. Remove them and split the distributor cap. the wires and rubber seal will come off with the top half.

Pull the wires through the seal and insert new wires through the top and seal leaving enough protruding to go over the pins inside the bottom half of the cap. Since there are 8 pins, 4 are unused. The unused pins connect to ground straps inside the distributor cap.

Be certain to seat the wires on the correct pins. Use solid core stranded wire. Now, push the top, rubber, and wires back onto the bottom half with the pins stabbing the wire ends. Squeeze together and insert the two holding screws. Re-attach the distributor cap to the distributor making note of the locating pin and side clamp lands.

Really simple, a 15 minute job. Half hour if you are all thumbs.

If you need to replace the screws, do NOT use longer ones as they will contact the rotor.

Hi,
Its become a bit of a mission to get solid core leads here in Aus. What i have found so far are lawm mower, chainsaw leads but I beleieve the the core size is smaller that what I want.

Anyway I think I found what I need here on IBoats.com but the parts assistance request I put in for confirmation last week has yet to get a reply.

Can someone please confirm if rhe leads in the link below are suitable for the chrysler.

Thanks for your help :)

Yep! If you click on the picture and enlarge it you can read on the wires the words "copper conductors." Those are solid core, copper ignition wires.
