Changing the Impeller question

I have a new boat (70 Starcraft) that I'm trying to get ready for the water. This is my first I/O (Mercruiser 120) and was wondering if I can change the water pump and impeller by dropping the lower or do I need to remove the upper and lower? Is there more gaskets that need to be changed if I remove the upper and lower together or will the impeller kit come with everything I need?

And pulling the drive gives you the opportunity to check and grease the unis, check the bellows, the gimbal bearing and the engine alignment. All of which are annual service items anyway... And pulling the drive only takes 3 minutes.... :D

and if ya pull the whole drive. it will be much, much easier to reassemble the lower to the upper with the whole drive on the bench.

+1 on everything these guys said but post up your engine serial number so you can get the Mercury service manual for your model then read, read, read.:)

Also when pulling the entire drive, have some bellows adhesive on hand for using to hold some of the the o-rings/gaskets in place especially for the first few times you do the r&r for the drive. I also use a little on the quad ring when reattaching the two halves also. Only about $8 for the small tube and is part number 92-86166Q-1.

Re: Changing the Impeller question

SN: 2728089 is what it says on the side of the upper. My head is swimming with all the suggested stuff I need to check out. Anybody know off hand what the part number is for the gasket kit if I decide to pull the upper and lower together? This thing has REALLY low hours usage since new. Maybe less than 100hrs. and was stored indoors since 1972. The impeller is a definate replacement though.
