The larger red wire that goes to the ammeter and a ground wire. Are these the only two connections? Is the alternator self-exciting?
Do I unhook and remove the old external regulator and wiring or just leave it? Any specific place the ground wire needs to go, or just to the block somewhere?
thanks

160 Mercruiser SN 2497444

The alternator is self exciting. The battery terminal on the alternator connects to the positive side of your battery circuit (does not have to be the battery itself). Ground wire can go to the engine block. You will have to rev the engine to get the alternator to start charging. I taped the end of the regulator wires and left the whole thing in place.

The alternator will charge at idle just like your old alternator. Really the only difference is the regulator is now inside the alternator instead of outside.
