Re: Charging Guest For Gas Money

It is a complex and depends,no clear cut rule but typically, no. 99% of the time my guests offer $$ and I refuse. I have had friends offer to buy lunch or bring snacks, bring drinks along for me and wife and I sometimes accept that. If I go offshore in other friends boats and the fuel bill is considerable the trip $$ is split and we know that going in, these trips can approach 800-1000 dollars. Other times when I accept $$ is if we travel on vacation with friends and the trip expenses (hotel, fuel there, dockage etc )are split up then the fuel in the boat used while at location is split. I always leave with it full and that tank is on me.
About once a year me and some friends with boats organize a boat day for lots of non boaters , co-workers. Most offer to chip in and I always refuse, I know going in I am providing a day on the water for people w/o boats and I am happy to do that. Like inviting people to your house for a BBQ and expecting them to buy a hamburger.

I only ask that people bring their own drinks and food. When I say that they usually end up saying "don't worry we've got yours too"

then again I only own a 4 cyl that sips gas....so it's not a big deal..

I always top off the tank after a trip.At the gas dock 9 times out of 10,gas money is usually offered.
With the price of fuel:mad: today, it is only fair.

Depends.

"Hey, can I come fishing with you sometime?" - no charge.
"Hey, When you taking me fishing?" - when you coff up the gas money.
"Hey, I'm on vacation and want to know if you'll take me skiing?" - Shure, for gas and beers.

People I really like - no charge (but they offer something for the day, beer, gas, food, bait, etc) and they help launch, clean up etc.

People I don't like - never hear them "ask". They generally tell me they're ready after church on Sunday, etc. (I'll leave at 6:00 am)

Amazing how some people act like they're doing you a favor when boating. Or ask to go fishing and show up naked. No bait, plugs, rod, cooler, beer, anything but shorts & sandles!

What is so complex? If you invite people to spend the day boating with you, you don't ask for gas money. Pretty simple.

Depends on who. The "normal group of freinds" will allways bring lots of food and drink. They will offer gas money 80% of the time and I will take it about 50% of the time. The one who allways offers just got his own boat at the end of last season so no more from him. If they are not in the normal crowd and invited themselfs one of the group will probably say something to them and I do not need to. It's not that I can't afford it but, I work for a living and I have other bills to. So it makes it better on everyone.

I like to go to the fuel dock with people on board, especially the ones that "invite themselves". If they don't offer to pay for at least a portion, you know what they are made of.QUOTE]

I'm in this club, especially when tubing or waterskiing. Although, if someone brings beer, along, or buys a couple (or lunch) at the harbor bar, I'm happy to call it even
