Hi everyone. This is my first post on the forum. Seems like there is a wealth of knowledge here.

I'm having an issue with my 1985, 75hp Johnson outboard. I'm just not getting a charge to the battery. I've checked both the stator, and the rectifier, and I'm getting readings of 20+V at idle, and higher when increasing RPM.

I believe that the issue is in the way I've wired the motor. I've just recently put it on, and I've never had it charging the battery. I have everything wired up, including my tach, which is working perfectly. I just can't seem to understand where I've gone wrong.

MY MAIN question is this:

Is there a single wire responsible for charging the battery, or does the charge come back along the 6 gauge Red wire from the solenoid?

Thanks in advance. I plan on going fishing tomorrow :)

The charge comes from the alternator through the rectifier via the red wire leading from the rectifier to the large incoming starter solenoid post.

The rectifier converts the AC voltage to DC using diodes.

The charging system is for maintenance only and will not charge a discharged battery. The rectifier is unregulated unless someone added a regulator.
