Ok so my charging system isn't charging my battery. How do I go about testing the charging components? Year and size of motor is still yet to be determined. Here's all the info I have so far. model # 62B8J. Purchased on Aug. 7/78 And there are some pics in this thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=425252. It's a 4 cyl w/ the larger tc carbs. All your help is appreciated.

Re: Charging Issues

as its a 6 hp is probably only got a rectifier ..a ground wire ..two wires from under the flywheel and a red wire probably via a cut out to the battery.. First locate these bits and see if you have 12v on the red terminal ( black to red ) ..check if the current trip is re set . once you have that . check you have an AC voltage between the two wires from under the flywheel ..will only be about 6v at idle ..thats fine....If your battery voltage does not go up when you have plently of throttle on replace the rectifier ..cheap ...radio shack .virtual village . ebay .

Re: Charging Issues

Something is wrong somewhere. Are the pictures you are referring to (four cylinder) the right ones for 62B8J?

Model 62B8J (two cylinder) comes up as:

62B8J 6 1978

The engine in question is the one from the pic's. So that means I have the wrong paper work for the engine. Back to square one on that issue. Any help with the 4 cyl. would be appreciated.

Re: Charging Issues

you have a regulator just to the left of the starter motor , The same test applies as I wrote above just change rectifier to regualator ...I would first check battery volts when its is running and see if it rises over 12v ..if it does and goes to 14.4v then its charging. You need to check if reg output (red) is connected to battery pos via an overload cut out and that that wire is all good....I can see it is not 6 HP !!!!
