i have a 1997 javelin with a 200 johnson venom. when i turn the key to the on postion it goes through the 4 light test. the check engine light stays on. It will do this without try'n to start the engine. is the tach bad? i mean the thing works, but that crazy light keeps coming on with the buzzer if i crank the motor. if the tach is bad where do i get one? or is there any thing else i need to check before i bring it to the boat mechanic.

I reached under the dash to see if the conection was loose and the light would come on and go off when i would shake it. now it just stays on.

sorry so long, try'n to tell it all. thanks!

Its a multipin plug on the tach right?Clean it and plug it back in, I think its trying to tell you theres a problem.
Can you read the codes?

Re: check light

If you crank the starter and the tach registers the rpm the tach is ok.
The buzzer on my 94 150 is coded, different beeps indicate different problems. Its critical and vital to know what the codes are, you could blow an engine in minutes otherwise.
Low oil is beep beep beep and no oil is a constant beeeeeep.
But I think the overheat is the same constant beep, you'd know because it would trigger the slow function and run at 2500rpm max.

Not sure if
www.outboardbooks.com
carries your factory service manual.

If you don't want to work on it, see the man. Just don't take it out and run it, that could the final run.

Re: check light

Check Engine is a fuel restriction alarm. If it goes off when the motor is not running it is defective.

You might check the wiring.
