Check valve in the fuel pick up?

Just wondering why boat manufacturers would put a check ball in the fuel pick up on boats with permanent fuel tanks.

If you have a mechanical fuel pump it keeps fuel at the ready so you don't have to crank so long. The check valve on my last boat went out and I would have to crank for what seemed like forever to get it to fire if it sat for more than a day.

I don't think that's entirely correct. It's an anti-siphon valve that keeps fuel from siphoning into the bilge if the fuel line is broken between the tank & the pump. It's a CG required safety device.

superbenk it it - it is a required safety device - has nothing to do with extended cranking - even though it may help in some situations.
