can anyone tell me the purpose of the check valve inside the fuel pump of my 1988 60 hp mariner? does it restrict the fuel from flowing when the carb is not running? I have an internal fuel leak from the spray nozzle inside the carb when the motor is not running and is tilted up. i was wondering if this may be my problem. any help? thanks.

Re: check valve question

I am not sure how to answer your question about the valves in the fuel pump, but from my experience with my '79 70HP and what I have read on this page fuel leaking out of the carbs when the motor is tilted up is fairly common and I don't think it is a real concern.

Re: check valve question

Fuel pumps work off the cycling vacuum and pressure from the crankcase to pump fuel. When the diaphragm feels vacuum, fuel is sucked in a 1 way check valve, then when the diaphragm feels pressure it is pumped out of another (opposite) 1 way check valve and the inlet one is now closed. Your problem is more likely associated with a leaking or stuck open float valve in the carb than the fuel pump.
