Checking alignment -- can this be right?!

Hey...
I bought the $100 transom service kit from basic power to do b4 the season.

I've gotten the old bearing out and the new one in. Since my alignment tool didn't arrive on time I removed the u-joint shaft from the stern drive to use as a temp alignment tool.

What's really confusing me is that it seems the u-joint shaft is too large for the new gimbal bearing! The shaft taper seems to exceed the ID of the bearing just before it reaches the o-rings - which I assume are supposed to ride inside the gimbal bearing. To the naked eye it seems that there's a significant difference in diameter -- 1/16"? Maybe 1/8"? But I'll admit my level of panic could be effecting my approximation.

Is it possible the alignment is so far off the u-joint shaft appears too large for the gimbal bearing?

I contacted basic power and was told there's no "larger" bearing that could have been mistakenly shipped with my kit -- the same part is used for mercs/omc's/volvo's, and as for the u-joint shaft - the only variance for my drive is length.

For now this appears to be a significant problem.

Any thoughts?

My advice is wait for your alignment tool.

I would not have removed the input shaft/bearing carrier. Make sure you get all the shims/gaskets back on that you took off. They set the gear lash.

As far as I know, everyone uses the same bearing so you should be ok there.

If you take off the o-rings will the shaft go in?
I have had a couple shafts with rust under the orings that were problems.

DHP

its likely your bearing is cocked and the shaft is butting against the splines in the hub. the alignment too will help you "re-align". the shaft diameter is very similar to the hole in the gimbal bearing.

Didn't try that, but it's not going far enough for them to be a factor yet. The lip of the GB is still an inch or so from the o-rings.
