1972-85 hp rude I have a multi meter How do I check my stator to see how much it is charging?

Re: checking stator

this is from my 78 manual.

a. set meter switches to negative and 500

b. disconnect two wire connectro between statro and powerpack

c. insert meter red lead prob into cavity "A" of connector from stator. Insert meter black lead probe into cavity "B" of connector.

***for above...look into stator side of connector...look at it with the half with wires in the plug on top...when you look into the connector going to the stator the wires should be on the top side.... "A" is on the left..."B" is on the right

d. crank engine and observe reading

e. if meter reading is 160 or higher go to sensor coil test

f. if low or no reading, check resistance of the charge coil. if resistance does not meet specs, replace charge coil.

**do this on both sets of terminals coming from the stator

hope that helps

Re: checking stator

If you are checking the battery charge of the stator it will be the two yellow wires is A/C output.

You disconnect them from your screw terminal, set your DVM to A/C scale, probaly on the 50V scale crank your engine and rad the ac volts.

If you question your rectifier then do the ohm test on it.

Re: checking stator

Well, if it's like my '71 100 horse (it should be) then you have a 9 amp charging system with stator, cap and rotor under the flywheel.

There should be two leads coming from the stator to the terminal block. Where those two leads connect, there are two lead either sharing the terminal, or on the next terminal that has a common connection. Those second pair of leads, adjacent, are the AC inputs to the regulator / rectifier.

The red lead coming from the regulator / rectifier is +12V DC output to the system. This is the charge current supplied from the charging system.

Take an ammeter, or your multi meter if it's set up to read 12v dc amps, and connect the negative lead to the red wire from the rectifier. Connect the positive lead to the battery positive side.

While running the engine, you will see the charge / discharge rate real time.

Re: checking stator

I have a amplifier. i was hoping there was a way to just hook up the multimeter and check the votage as it runs.

Re: checking stator

Do I disconnect the red led? are can I leave it hooked up to the ternimal? Can I hook up tp the battery from the hot wire on the selonoid?

Re: checking stator

Well, the way I showed you is how. You asked for amps, not volts.

A voltage check would be done from the same lead, (red wire out from rectifier) but hook the positive side of the multi meter, (set to 12V DC) to the output lead from the rectifier, the negative lead from the multimeter to ground or battery negative. This will show real time output of the charging system in VOLTS.

Again, if you want AMPS, the previous diagram / description shows how. You don't have to disconnect anything from the terminal block, just piggyback your tester or meter leads to terminals. In fact, doing the amp check, you will smoke it quick if you disconnect the rectifier output lead and run it through the ammeter to DC positive.

You will need a load on the system to check things right too. Like, turn on all the lights, let the battery recharge, ect. Each load will effect the amp rate reading. Adding / removing load should be noticed while this test is run.

I actually plan on adding an ammeter to my boat's gauges instead of just volts. This will let me know the rate of charge / discharge while running, idle, or stopped.

Yes you can connect to the solenoid's terminal., or, if you are wanting to check SYSTEM volts, just hook the leads to the battery's pos and neg terminals. It will show the voltage higher than 12 if the system is being charged.
