Its time to think about a newer truck.Ive looked at a lot and will not by new due to the stupid prices expecially for a retired steelworker. One ive looked at was a chevy 4x4 4 door with the 5.3 litre motor.Thoughts on that truck?Towing duties will be fairly light 2000lbs max .

The 5.3 has been around in 5 different distinct designs. What year?

I have a 2014 Sierra 1500 SLE 4 door with the 5.3. It will tow 9600#, and I get a bit over 20mpg with it with my best being 23.5mpg

I have the '99 that I inherited when Dad passed and it has a 5.3 in it and I have nothing to really complain about, it never refuses to do anything I need it to, I have the 9600 pound rating on mine as well and it gets good fuel mileage, the only thing that has been a bother, is in 3 years I have had to replace the rear brakes a couple of times and I have not been able to find a Mass Air Flow Sensor that will last more than about 10, 000 miles.

The 5.3 has evolved over the years. I had a 99 that I got from my dad just like MtBoatguy. Problem with the older ones like I had is that they have very low HP and torque. The newest ones are close to 50% more. Look at the specs for all the years since 99 and see which years had the greatest HP/Torque increases and try to get one of those.

I agree with Bruce, the 99 in stock form was no power house, fortunately the one in my Dad's truck had been warmed over quite a bit by the guy he bought it from who towed his race car and trailer with it, but I have drove a stock one and it was no really stand out. If I decide to get a newer one, I will be looking at the power charts on the engine, but it has not been a bad truck.

It is comfortable, rides well and gets pretty good fuel mileage.

Seems that for 2014 hp is 355 and torque is 383 .Seems very good for my needs.6 speed tranny is suppose to deliver 22 mpg highway.Direct injection and cylinder shutoff (afm) is also standard.

That would be a good year. Personally, I would buy the plug that goes into the OBD2 port to shut off the AFM. You can google the issues with oil consumption because of this "feature".

Theres about a 98 percent chance I will be passing on that chevy. Its a full 4 doors which I neither what nor need.I will be keeping my eyes open for a supercab from chev or ford with the 6.6 box.Its a beautiful truck just don't like a truck with full 4 doors as I have zero need for that. How do you like your new ford bruce?

The next one I buy will be just about the same as the one I have

It is just my wife and I, it tows the boat and does the plowing in the winter and gets pretty good fuel mileage .

rightMT I would do the same but a supercab to me is a nice storage area ,lol. The 6.6 box has been perfect for my Polaris ace atv.If I could live without the back seat storage a reg cab would be ok for me also.Maybe something like this.r

it's tough to sell a truck that isn't 4 doors. That's what people want.
The 5.3 is a revver, not a grunter. It makes decent power when it gets spinning a little faster.

Understand what your saying but I could care less what other people want .By that I mean I will be buying for me and most likely my last truck ever so if when im done with it it heads to the junk yard I don't care.Just like the one I own now I would shoot for 15 years plus ownership.Being single I see no need for 4 full doors so its a supercab of maybe even a reg cab with 8 foot box for me.

Think I will go talk to a guy I know fairly well that's a used car dealer who takes orders for wish list trucks. If anybody can find me what I want in excellent shape and decent mileage its him.I got my last 2 off of him .My current ride was a off lease MNR truck and in superb shape with all service per mfg done on time .He,s the only dealer ive ever dealt with since the 1980,s.

Took a kia sorrento out for a test drive today.Wow ,might be rethinking getting a truck.V6,awd,loaded ,2014 ,6 speed, can easily tow my rig ,tons of power.Me liked. You get much more for the price vs a truck which in Canada sell at a big premium. Can always keep my old truck for truck like emergencies as I know due to the body cancer underneath would bring very little sold .

I'm not sure on the model year but my wife's cousin has a Kia Sorrento and it spends more time in the repair shop than on the road. Not sure if its a lemon or not but I'm steering clear of that vehicle.

No offense but anything brand new gets a fairly high rating. That's when everyone is thrilled about their brand new vehicle as its light years ahead of what they had. Check back in a few years of ownership to see the true rating. The Kia I'm referring to is probably 3-5 years old so again I'm steering clear based on their experience.

Or in other words....your money, your vehicle. Just relaying real world experience with that model.
