I Posted sometime last year, my 1998 K1500 may be trying to melt the cat by too much acceleration. I was wrong, Who ever posted "lean fuel ratio" he or she was right. I had a slightly low fuel pressure problem combined with a piece of hair across the mass air fllow sensor. The truck would act like it was running out of gas while pulling a trailer, and would sometimes turn the service engine soon light on with a P0171 and a P0174 displayed with scan tool. It is doing a lot better now. Thanks

How did you solve the low fuel pressure? New pump? or did the regulator go bad?

The mass air flow censor is capable of the emissions system for all sorts of loops and fuel delivery is one of them. And any time you get the service engine light it always has tot due with emissions. My 98 1500 W/T is currently throwing the code for the #2 plug and missing so fwyi remember service light it's always emissions start with the fuel system and work your way throught the rest of it's emissions components

To solve low fuel pressure I replaced the fuel pump, wire connector was updated so I had to re-wire that to. I'm not sure where pressure regulator is, I think it is inside the plastic upper intake manifold!

also check for vacuum leaks of any kind... po171 po174 lean codes on both banks typically indicate vacuume leaks... But yea ive seen many times debris across the hot wire of the mass air meter give these same DTCs I personally would not have put the fuel pump in but hey you wont have to worry about it now...

My 2004 Silverado with 5.3L was throwing about 7 different codes on my scan tool when the SES light came on. It turned out that the Drivers side Cat was bad. Just to replace the cat cost me $300. Bad thing is there are 2 of them on there and he wanted $580 to replace both. But still better than a replacement direct fit set up.

#2 miss solved by wires and plugs replacement just hit the 120,000 miles and shes still sounds new. Just remember letting things like this go will cause issues down stream eventually just keeping up with simple tune-up's can save you hundreds down the road

Yep, I hear you way down in Georgia! A new intake gasket, due to coolant leaks, was a pleasure to replace, saw it leaking while idling the engine hooking boat trailer up, went boating anyway that day, I just tightened intake bolts until water stopped pouring, that day, not a good idea. I could of blown the motor. when I finally took it apart and looked at the gasket, it is a miracle it held.

I was told, a cat is warranty up 80000 miles on Chevys, did you check on possible warranty or are you over 80000 miles?

Yes, I wonder about that fuel pump, was it needed, but like you said, it is updated now, no worries, right? Is my new pump more tolerant to ethanol? I wonder.

the pressure was at bottom of of allowable specs under load, gauge taped to windshield going down highway. PSI was a hair higher with new pump , I think, but SES light came back on anyway, Thats when I found hair on my MAF screen, the hair may have been dangling through the screen touching the wire every "here and there".

Can mass air throw a skip code for specific cylinder?

That I'm not sure of but one thing you need to keep in mind with the 4.3 is they do not like to get to much above operating temp. From my experience they will not operate operate very efficiently once an overheat has happened.
