Childrens rights at school?

Things are definately going too far.

My wife teaches in a small school now since January. Yesterday she got a memo from the administration saying no drinks in the classroom anymore except water and coffee.
That is not too bad an idea, until the reason comes up.
The students had started bringing pop from home and carrying it with them all day drinking it. The administration decided this needed to end. The rule book states they can have water from home or buy pop in the schools pop machines after 1:30. Can not have pop in the classrooms. The students said it wasn't fair and violation of their rights not to let them drink pop in the classroom. Then they said it was not fair that teachers get to drink in class.
Final thing that stirkes me is Pepsi has a contract with the school where the school will not allow any coke products in the building. So nobody is allowed to bring any coca cola products to the school.

Now when did it become a right of children, elementary children, to have pop machines in school and have pop or any other drink in the classroom? Why would it be unfair for teachers to drink during class? They now are allowed to drink if they have their drink in a cup or insulated mug where the contents can't be seen. They are also discouraged from drinking in front of the kids. They stand in the class talking most of the day so they should be able to drink as needed.
I see now how abused and mistreated I was as a child. Why wasn't I allowed to carry a bottle of pepsi around school with me, and a backpack full of candy eating and drinking through the day as I wished?

You forgot that you were denied the 'right' to have your cell phone in class as well as a student!

Thier wasnt any pop machines in school when I went. ( I know we all carried guns to defend ourselves from dinasours) Dont know why thier are any in the schools. I know it is a controversy, Abilene schools had a big blow up over the Pepsi and Dr. Pepper Issue in thier school. No other kind of pop sold there. But the local pepsi DrPepper Dist paid the bill to put astroturf on the football field for them. And it was a big bill, so I kind understand the "You scrach my back and Ill scrach yours deal" Dont know what pepsi is doing for your school but I bet its simular. JUst a thought.

Good grief!!

We had no food or drink at all in the classroom. Neither did teachers. They had coffee or whatever between classes or at recess.

Further, we were not allowed to use slide rules in math classes (calculator? Whazzat?).

In my day children were children and were under the supervision of the school and faculty. We did what the heck we were told or suffered memorable consequences.

I don't at all like the idea of a school contracting with one supplier (Pepsi in this case) and banning competitors. Not an acceptable model of a free market.

One thing I hate about getting/being old is seeing a completely different world than I knew. Yes, it is, in some important ways, better, but in many ways it is anarchy.

JB believe it or not the schools put it out to bid for the supplier of the soft drinks in the schools vending machines. So it is a level playing Field. We currently have Coke.

The only vending machines when I went to school were in the faculty room.

The pop machines are there for the revenue. The money is supposed to pay for the extra activities, football, basketball, volleyball etc.

The cell phone issue is a completely different thing too. The children are fighting here at my daughters school because it is against their rights to have the cell phones taken away if they talk on them in class. Parents are backing the kids "in case they need to talk to their child during the day". Parents are calling little johnny to ask if he needs anything fvrom the store while she is there and things like that.
I just don't get it.

I should re-phrase. Teachers are not allowed and do not drink during the class. But they can have their drink in the classroom out of sight or in a cup where the contents can not be seen. Most if not all of the teachers keep their drinks on the shelf hidden. They can drink between classes and during planning periods.

Agreed, I think to some extent that is true for every generation.

Some things in life just shouldn't be Mucked with though.

Take Oreo cookies. They are dark on the outside and white on the inside ! Should be eaten with a glass of milk, or hot black coffee in deer camp on a cold winter morning. Now leave em alone!

Same with schools:
If it is not needed in the class room it doesn't belong there. Period.

Student Rights:
Students have the right to go home on time if they don't mess up.

Teachers:
Teachers have paddles. That work. G*dforbid your parents ever find out they had to use it.

Candy, food, pop, calculators and cell phones?
You can pick them up on your way out the door after school!

OK rant over
Now its time to put the potroast in the oven and punish my cats for what they might do tomorrow ! :D :D :D

Just the class I want.

A bunch of teenagers with their hormones raging jacked up on caffine and sugar drinks and talking on cell phones.

Was at "Family Reading Night" at my sons school. It's a night where kids can get computor time or work on other assignments with some teachers present.

One kid was threatened several times to have his father called. They never did and he never improved his behaivor.

One girl was talking on her cell phone. Teacher confinscated it. Girl says, "What if my mother calls me?".. Teacher replied, "I'll answear it and tell her why I have it." ZING!!! Look on girls face told it all.

So much to say here but I'm not gonna...Other than can I send a donation for the new Water fountian to be installed in the common's area so everyone has access to it. And maybe a dixie cup dispenser.

The lid's also go against my grain, I would think open cup. Wouldn't want to think someone was hidding what they were drinking. (not infering your wife, but just general openness).

I think you know that doesn’t fly. Been tried, lost every time it has come before the courts. The school can control the distribution of product, but not the availability of competing product. If one soda brand is allowed, all soda brands are allowed. Soda companies won’t challenge the rule because they have a vested interest in protecting their turf in other schools. It’s kind of like a toothless tiger, the school can have a rule of no Coca Cola product, but the school cannot enforce the rule if Pepsi is available.

Re: Childrens rights at school?

Neumanns, I think the lid thing on drinks is for cleanlieness. It also serves to avoid spitting in cups, but I think the intent is cleanlieness to avoid spills.

18R the memo actually said if Coca Cola products are brought into school they must be hidden and out of their marked container.

The school got a grant a few years ago for laptops. Now every student is issued a laptop computer. The school is on a wireless network that as soon as the kids turn their computers on they are connected. Papers are electronically submitted, notes during class lecture are already prepared by teachers and transmitted to the laptops during class. The city library is on a wireless network too so when the kids come in for school research they are connected and do it with the laptops.

Wow, what a wakeup for me. My days in school weren't spent fighting dinosaurs, we only had to fight Indians :D
Our Rights? Bring in a #2 Pencil, lined notebook paper, and a three ring binder.
Soft Drink Machine? You gotta be kidding me. We had water fountains in the hall ways. Milk with lunch if you remembered to bring your lunch money. Yeh real money, not any sort of voucher or paperwork at the office that stated little Bobbie gets his milk for free.

And Cell phones? We had YELL PHONES.We'd yell over the fence to our play pals and yell to ask if they could come out and play!!

Re: Childrens rights at school?

In the late 60's, I was in Charleston, SC. Slacks, button down shirt, no food or drink except the water fountain and lunch room.

In '72 we moved to Tulsa, Ok. Jeans were allowed, shorts in the spring. I was in heaven. :) Still no food outside the cafeteria, had to use water fountains.

In '76 moved to Vacaville, Ca. Jeans, shorts, whatever. Halter tops and hot pants for the girls whenever it was warm enough.(really in heaven now. :D ) Anything goes with food or drink in the class room, hallway, wherever. Even as a teen I knew anarchy when I saw it.

So far, my sons elementary school is pretty conservative. They can bring a bottle of water if so desired.
