Anyone else taking lipitor or pravastatin or some other statin drug??

Do you get these 2-3 second sharp stabs of pain where there is no reason to hurt? How do you deal with them?

I have a supply of HydraCodone, but am reluctant to take it because: 1.) It is narcotic and at least mildly addictive, 2.) I cannot drive because I would be guilty of DUI if nabbed, and 3.) I don't like the buzz I get.

On the other hand, some evenings I get a really, really nasty attitude when the pains get too bad. Very hard to be nice to newbie posters who have made some innocent error, like EDIT, EDIT.

There it goes again.:(

Muscle pains while taking statins can be a sign og muscle damage which is a well known side effect of these drugs. Call your primary care doctor sooner rather than later.

What you describe sounds like myalgia, somthing I suffer from due to massive nerve damage. I looked up the statin drugs and that was one of the first things I found. http://www.spacedoc.com/muscle_pain_statins.htm I have hydracodone too, but haven't taken any for months. I hope you can find relief from your pain, we don't need the wrath of JB to fall upon us :D

Re: Cholesterol lowering drugs.

I know what you mean JB. I cannot take statin meds because of the muscle pains they can produce. When I was taking them, I was unable to perform very much physical work. Every muscle would ache so bad that I had limited mobility. Over the years I have met many people who complain about the same thing. Now a day, I just take low dose aspirin once a day.
Talk with your daughters JB. Many nurses and doctors are still very speculative about their effects.

That explains everything! :)

I take Lipitor 20mg. I figured my muscles just get sore because I am getting older.

Statins are "BAD NEWS". No one size fits all on cholesterol counts. Too low and you're setting yourself up for the big one. Go to and read "Douglass Report". Join and read all you can pertaining to your ailments. It's free and gospel to me.

Douglass Report is a major scam site trying to sell you their vitamins. Get real!

One of the problems with being a major cardiac patient (along with a diabetes, osteoporosis and recovering from AAA surgery) is the number of scam artists that promise to make you live forever if you will only take their pill (along with the 13 other pills you take).

I do not want to live forever, but I do want my remaining time to be at least comfortable and pain free.

Is that too much to hope for?

Sorry for this JB. Yes Douglass has a line of supplements but he doesn't push them at you. The guy is well over 80, going strong, doesn't need more money, and tired of mainstream doc's and big pharma pushing their line of drugs with bad side affects, Your opinion is just that, but an honest read won't cause any harm.

I was not referring to Douglass, FF. I haven't read any of his stuff. I was referring to the mountain of spam I get daily. It has made me very cynical about miracle treatments.

Anyone here old enough to remember Krebiozen??

My doctor has had me on 500MG. 3 times a day of Niacin for several years for high Cholesterol, seems to be working good, with only side effects being a "flushing sensation" for a few minutes after you take it, but you get over that flushing after you take it for a while. Might be a good alternative to the "Statins". Google up Niacin for lots of information about it. Regarding your pain, it sounds like Angina, usually related to a restricted heart blood supply. Maybe you should mention it to your doctor, there's lots of new medications out now that might prevent your having a life-threatening heart attack. Regarding pain relievers like that Hydracodone, it seems to me like just covering up a potential serious problem. Good Luck JB!

Man JB I'm sorry to hear this also, I can't help much though I am fortunate enough to be able to control my levels with diet and exercise still. I hope they get these drugs figured out before I slow down to much

Re: Cholesterol lowering drugs.

Been the round on what is angina and what is statin caused, Robert. I have had 4 MIs and am very familiar with angina. I can recognize it in a nanosecond.

These are transient (a few seconds), very sharp pains in my foot, leg, knee, forearm, etc, etc. Places where there is no injury or disease.

Cardiologist tried to get me to work up to 400MG of niacin. Flush lasted for hours, had nightmares of being on fire and broke out in hives and huge red blotches all over my body. I might have adapted to it if I had survived, but I don't tolerate those side effects well.

I have been trying to adapt to statin pain for 12 years, now. Since I take a 325g aspirin daily I can't take more (it wouldn't do any good anyway).

I agree that hydracodone just covers up pain, just like any pain management medication you can name, but that is what my PCP recommended. She recognized that I take any pain killer in the presence of the 5 other (prescription) medications I take, plus 5 OTC supplements. I only take them when the pain (that does not signal injury) gets into my attitude and alters my behavior.

I really appreciate all the insight and thoughts, fellows. I am in the care of excellent physicians and the 6 Healthcare Professionals among my descendants and their spouses, but none of them have personally experienced what we are dealing with.

While I respect and treasure their advice I wanted to hear from other old guys in the same boat. I do know that the guy who is at the bottom of his class graduating from Med School is called Doctor.:D

Mrs Boomyal (aged?, well let's say of Soc Sec Age) has tried 5 different Statins. Every one has caused the pains you describe. Some of them sooner and some of them later. She now refuses to take them at all. It was just mentioned to me the other day that these pains are NOT a good thing and the the perscribing doctor should have stated so.

I was perscribed statins by my cardiologist even though my cholesterol is in the 115 to 169 range. I purchased the perscription but it still sits in my drawer. After my wife's experience I refused to take them. She does have high cholesterol but does not have any heart issues.

I have taken them all at one time or another. Right now, and it seems to be working, I take Lopid, crestor and Lovaza with no side affects.. My triglycerides stayed very high (over 1000 at first) until I started taking the Lovaza (concentrated fish oil). Now that they are close to normal my insurance company doesn't want to pay for them any more even tho the doctors say I need them.

Re: Cholesterol lowering drugs.

Just found out today that statins can also affect the liver. I've only been on them for a month but my liver function numbers went way up. Now it's a matter of trying to lower cholesterol by diet without statins and see if the liver numbers come back down in two weeks. I'm also taking methotrexate so it might be the combination of the two.
